Are symptoms of burnout different from depression?

Not really. Burnout and depression share similarities in symptoms but differ in origins and persistence. Burnout stems from work-related stress, so burnout symptoms involve emotional and physical exhaustion, reduced performance, cynicism, and detachment, often improving with changes in work conditions or rest. What are the five stages of burnout?

The five stages of burnout, as put forward by psychologists, include the honeymoon phase, onset of stress, chronic stress, burnout, and habitual burnout. These stages illustrate the progression of emotional and physical exhaustion, highlighting the importance of early recognition and intervention to prevent further deterioration.

Honeymoon phase: This initial stage is characterized by enthusiasm, high energy, and optimism. At the beginning of a new job or project, people might feel motivated, excited, and dedicated. They are enthusiastic about their tasks and might put in extra effort willingly.

The onset of stress: In this stage, individuals start to encounter factors that challenge their enthusiasm and energy. Workload increases, expectations may become more demanding, and individuals might start feeling more pressure. Despite these stressors, people often try to cope by working harder or pushing themselves further.

Chronic stress: As stress persists and coping mechanisms prove ineffective, individuals enter the chronic stress phase. Habitual burnout: The final stage is marked by constant burnout. At this point, burnout becomes a part of day-to-day routine. Individuals may feel trapped in a cycle of exhaustion and may struggle to find motivation. This stage often requires significant intervention and lifestyle changes to recover from.
