Fact Check

What is depression?

Depression is a mental health disorder characterised by a persistent feelings of sadness, loss of interest in activities, and disruptions in sleep and appetite. It significantly impacts thoughts, emotions, and daily functioning, sometimes leading to severe consequences such as self-harm or suicidal thoughts.

What are common signs of depression?

Key common signs of depression include persistent low mood, decreased interest or pleasure, changes in sleep and appetite, fatigue, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, difficulty concentrating, and, in severe cases, thoughts of death or suicide. Depression’s complexity stems from a combination of genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors.

It is important to recognise that depression varies among individuals, and its manifestation can be influenced by genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors.

What is the treatment for depression?

The treatment for depression can vary from person to person. While there may not be a definitive cure for depression in the sense of permanently eliminating the possibility of experiencing depressive symptoms, many individuals can successfully manage and alleviate their symptoms with appropriate treatment.

Common approaches to treating depression include:

Psychotherapy (Counseling): Various forms of psychotherapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and interpersonal therapy (IPT), are effective in treating depression. These therapies help individuals explore and address thought patterns, behaviors, and emotions contributing to their depression.

  • We previously explored the role of therapy and various treatment methods in managing heightened anxiety levels. Additionally, we engaged in an insightful discussion with Dr. Manisha Gaur, a Clinical Psychologist and Counselor, focusing on anxiety disorders among teens and the important role parents play in reducing these challenges.

Medication: Antidepressant medications can be prescribed by healthcare professionals to help regulate neurotransmitters in the brain and alleviate depressive symptoms.

Lifestyle Changes: Adopting a healthy lifestyle can have a positive impact on mood. This includes regular exercise, a balanced diet, sufficient sleep, and stress management.

Supportive Relationships: Building and maintaining strong social connections can provide emotional support and understanding, which can be crucial in managing depression.

Mind-Body Practices: Practices like mindfulness meditation and yoga have shown promise in reducing depressive symptoms by promoting relaxation and emotional well-being.

It is important to note that the effectiveness of these approaches can vary among individuals. Some people may respond well to one type of treatment, while others may benefit from a combination of therapies. Additionally, the severity of depression can influence the choice of treatment.

Can cardamom cure depression?

Not exactly. There is some limited evidence suggesting that cardamom may have calming and mood-lifting properties. But cardamom alone cannot and should not be considered a cure for mental depression.

A study suggests that cardamom may have anti-depressant properties due to its potential effects on certain neurotransmitters like serotonin. However, it is primarily done on animals and more robust research is needed. Cardamom’s calming aroma can be anecdotal for relaxation and stress reduction, which can indirectly improve mood.

Depression is a complex mental health condition with various contributing factors. It requires comprehensive treatment approaches, often involving therapy, medication, and lifestyle changes, not just single dietary interventions.

Also, self-treating depression can be dangerous. It is crucial to seek professional help from a licensed mental health professional who can accurately diagnose and recommend the most suitable treatment plan for you.

Rahul Bansal, Psychiatrist

Dr Rahul Bansal, Consultant Psychiatrist in an interview with THIP adds, “Any delay in treatment will worsen the health”.

Dr Binda Singh

The idea that cardamom alone can prevent depression is an oversimplification of a complex condition, and it is essential to approach depression treatment with a comprehensive and individualized approach.

Psychiatrist Dr Binda Singh states, “Depression is a disease and needs proper treatment. It can happen due to a variety of reasons, such as situational, trauma, physical health issues, etc. Depression needs intervention, which might include medication, counselling, positive thoughts, communication, etc. Unfortunately, the dietary cure for depression has no scientific evidence”.

Dr Sameer Kalani

Experienced psychiatrist Dr Sameer Kalani in an interview with THIP MEDIA informs that home remedies alone cannot treat the root cause of depression.
