When the body faces an uncertain, unfamiliar, or conflicting situation, it undergoes stress. Chemical changes occur in the body to provide it with more energy. The body enters an alert or alarm mode — the heartbeat, blood pressure, and blood sugar increase. After the stressor passes, the body returns to its normal state. However, overstress can cause the body to stay in alarm mode. Here, we talk about the signs of overstress.

What are the causes of overstress?

There can be many situations that result in overstress.

Pressures at the workplace can lead to long-standing stress. There are various factors at a job that can cause stress. Work stressors include excessive workload, time pressures, long hours, complex tasks, and a lack of breaks. Physical conditions like poor lighting, congested spaces, and uncomfortable temperatures can be stressful.

International students often face excessive stress. They face many stressors. A new environment, language barriers, academic performance, and financial problems are some.

Facing traumatic events, whether personal or social, can lead to stress. The COVID pandemic was one such stressful event for the world. Losing a loved one is a major stressful event in life. Studies show that the bereavement of a spouse increases the chances of illness and death.

Caregivers of chronically ill or ageing patients often suffer from high levels of stress. Relationship problems, financial difficulty, discrimination, and chronic illness can also cause stress.

What are the overstress symptoms?

Stress shows up in the body in many ways. It affects the mental capacity. Under stress, you may experience poor concentration, constant worrying, and memory issues. You may experience emotional disturbances such as agitation and irritability. Your behaviour may change. For instance, people start smoking under stress. When the level of stress is constantly high, these symptoms become worse.

Muscles become tense in response to stress. If there is overstress, the body stays in constant muscle tension. Persistent muscle tension results in ongoing pain in the shoulders, neck, and head.

During stress, we experience shortness of breath and rapid breathing. A healthy individual can adjust to this change. But in the case of people with pre-existing respiratory diseases such as asthma, it can lead to difficulty breathing. Overstress can cause the development of asthma in healthy individuals.

High levels of stress cause menstrual problems in females. For instance, the absence of menstrual cycles, painful periods, and longer menstrual cycles.

Long-term, ongoing stress can reduce testosterone levels in men. Thus, there is a reduction in sex drive and may even cause erectile dysfunction. Overstress causes persistent low-grade inflammation, which further leads to depression. Under stress, a person develops the urge to overeat, preferably fatty and sugary foods. If the person stays under continued stress, there is abdominal fat deposition. Overstress can cause obesity.

Studies show that exhaustion and overtiredness are stress symptoms. In extreme cases, it may lead to fatigue-related disorders like chronic fatigue syndrome. The stress response slows down digestion in the body. As a result, gastric symptoms like nausea, diarrhoea, and vomiting may arise. Excessive stress may lead to gastrointestinal problems like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

What are the complications if stress remains ignored?

Stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline cause changes in the immune system. Genetic and environmental factors cause autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis. Studies show that stress may increase the chances of autoimmune diseases. It causes both the beginning of the disease and the worsening of its symptoms.

Studies show that if psychological stress remains unmanaged, it can increase the risk of heart disease. Stress may also increase the incidence and worsening of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). It causes errors in inflammation and glucose metabolism in AD patients. Chronic stress is a contributor to diabetes through different mechanisms. It restricts the glucose uptake in the liver and muscles. It also suppresses insulin secretion, impairs glucose metabolism, and ultimately causes insulin resistance.
