A replaced knee doesn’t mean that it cannot cause any problem. A patient will need proper care to save the joint from any injury. Also, there are chances of a loosened knee or an unstable joint over a period of time. Post-surgery, the knee replacement surgery can affect the mobility. Therefore, you must exercise caution.
Can my knee replacement be damaged after surgery?
Yes. Replaced knee may cause some problems in a few cases. It may loosen up or become dislodged. It may not work the way it was supposed to and may have to be replaced again in the future. The joint may even become weak or numb if there is an injury to the nerves or blood vessels in the area of the surgery. If the patient falls, the prosthesis may damage or interfere with the healing process. Similarly, if you stress the joint with high-impact activities or excessive weight, there is a high risk of damage which may require replacement. The risk of damage is per the age, activity level, surgical history and a person’s weight. Patients who are obese and those who have had prior knee surgeries all have a higher increased risk of a failed implant.
Can you still have arthritis after knee replacement?
Yes. Knee replacement, also called knee arthroplasty or total knee replacement, is a surgical procedure to resurface a knee damaged by arthritis. Knee replacement surgery does not cure arthritis. Arthritis refers to the inflammation or swelling of either a single or multiple joints. There is no cure for arthritis. The treatment is done to limit the pain and inflammation and preserve the function of the joint. However, knee replacement surgery can correct the damage caused by arthritis and relieve the pain associated with it. It can help in reducing pain and stiffness, allowing for more comfortable movement and a return to an active lifestyle.
