A doctor would recommend knee replacement surgery when a patient’s knee has unrepairable damage, causing pain and reduced mobility, eventually affecting the quality of life. The best age bracket for this surgery is between 50-70 years of age.

When should a person go for a knee replacement advised?

When the knee joint is damaged or worn off, and the patient’s mobility is reduced, and the patient is suffering from unbearable pain even when they are resting.

The doctor will assess the patient they are finding it difficult to sit, walk, or work without feeling extreme pain in their knees, and their joint function is compromised. They will assess the age, severity of pain, and potential benefits before determining whether you are a fit candidate for surgery or not.

However, certain conditions can damage the joint to such an extent that a replacement is needed. Such conditions include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, hemophilia, knee deformity with pain and loss of cartilage, bone disorders, etc.

It must be noted that not every patient with the such a condition will need a surgery. It is only advised when other treatment options, such as physiotherapy, medications, etc., are unable to reduce the pain or improve the mobility of the patient.

What is the best age to have knee replacement surgery?

There is no such right or wrong age for knee replacement surgery. The age bracket of 50 to 70 years is knee replacement patients’ most common age group.

A systematic review by the Knee Surgery and Related Research in 2020 shows that the surgeries performed between 70-80 years of age show good outcomes. The outcome is best if the knee surgery was performed at 70 years of age.

Lastly, there wasn’t any significant difference observed in the revision or mortality rates between the age group of 70- 80 years of age. Although, with increasing age, the mortality increases. Therefore, the recommended optimal age to undergo knee replacement is considered to be the early 70s.

A patient below the age of 50 years is considered a young patient for surgery. Opting for such major surgery at such an age is generally not recommended, although nowadays, patients are undergoing it.
