Fact Check
Are periods longer than three days not normal?
Not exactly. A normal menstrual period typically lasts around three to seven days, with variations among individuals. So, periods longer than three days can be normal.
Period length can be influenced by factors such as age, hormonal balance, underlying health conditions, and certain medications. While periods longer than three days can be normal for some people, especially if they have a consistent and regular pattern, significantly longer periods or irregular bleeding could be indicative of an underlying health issue and should be discussed with a healthcare professional.
In case of unusually long periods lasting more than seven days with symptoms such as heavy bleeding, irregular cycles, or severe pain, it is advisable to consult a doctor. They can help determine the underlying cause and recommend appropriate treatment or management options.
We looked more into this and found that the claimant did not provide any proof for the claim made in the Facebook post. On checking the claimant’s Facebook account, we found no indications of medical expertise or any other health-related qualifications that could lend credibility to the statement.
Dr Anita Gupta, Associate Director at the Fortis La Femme, New Delhi informs, “Normal menstrual bleeding can last anywhere from three to seven days. But for any individual, a normal period is whatever is typical for her since the beginning. If it suddenly changes to more or lesser than that, it may be due to some underlying medical or gynaecological issue. Once in a while it can be due to stress or some lifestyle change.”
What is the normal duration of periods?
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists informs that a typical menstrual period spans from two to seven days, with the most substantial bleeding occurring within the initial three days.
The website further outlines several scenarios that qualify as abnormal. These are discussed below:
- Absence of menstruation in individuals aged 15 or older who have never experienced a period.
- Three years have passed since breast development without the onset of menstruation.
- Absence of menstruation in individuals aged 14 or older, coupled with factors such as an eating disorder, rigorous exercise, or excessive body hair growth (hirsutism).
- Transition from regular monthly periods to irregular cycles.
- Menstrual cycles occurring more frequently than every 21 days or less frequently than every 45 days.
- Intervals of over 90 days between menstrual periods, even for a single cycle.
- Menstrual periods extending beyond seven days in duration.
