Endometriosis is a disease in which there is a presence of tissue resembling the lining of the uterus (endometrium) outside the uterus. In this article, we will learn what menstrual cramps are, whether endometriosis cramps are painful and how to know if menstrual signs are indicative of an abnormality.

What are menstrual cramps?

Menstrual cramps are throbbing, aching cramps (sudden and involuntary contractions) that a woman might experience in her lower belly just before and during her period. Dysmenorrhea is the presence of uterine-originated painful cramps. These occur during menstruation and represents one of the most common causes of pelvic pain and menstrual disorder.

Can endometriosis cause painful cramps?

Yes. Endometriosis may have various symptoms, such as severe menstrual cramps, pain in the lower back and pelvis, and discomfort during intercourse.

A significant feature of endometriosis is pelvic or belly pain, which is accompanied by abdominal cramps. It might start before your period and last several days. The nature of the pain in this condition is sharp and stabbing. Unfortunately, even medications don’t help with these cramps and ache. Some women say it feels like their insides are being pulled down. They have a gnawing or throbbing feeling that can be severe. Dysmenorrhea or cramps are also mostly accompanied by lower back and abdominal pain.

The differentiating feature of endometriosis is that the pain can last for more than one day and even continue after the period. Most commonly, the region where you women feel this pain is the lower abdomen, pelvis or lower back. The pain may not be easily relieved with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Endometriosis may also cause pelvic pain between periods, pain with sex, and pain with bowel movements.

The pain that some people with endometriosis experience is not cyclic. Instead, some people with endometriosis have constant pain, regardless of where they are in their menstrual cycle. People can have endometriosis pain that is persistent and interrupts their ability to take part in their daily activities.

How will I know if menstrual signs are indicative of an abnormality, such as endometriosis?

The body may give signs which depict that menstruation isn’t normal. Normally, the menstrual cramps start a few days before the period and usually last till the period ends. If these are mild to moderate, they can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers such as NSAID’s. However, severe pain can be indicative of an abnormality if you are unable to get a relief from such pain killers. Other than this, if the cramps are severe, causing nausea or vomiting or accompanied by heavy menstrual bleeding, it can be suggestive of an abnormality, such as endometriosis. Therefore, if you’re dealing with severe cramps and other intense symptoms, don’t ignore them and always consult a gynecologist.
