Fever occurs as the body initiates a response to eliminate the virus or bacteria that caused the infection. As these microorganisms thrive at normal body temperature, the elevated temperature due to the fever makes it harder for them to survive. Additionally, fever activates the immune system, which plays a vital role in fighting off infections. This article will highlight on the causes of frequent fevers and the ways to treat it.

What can be the causes of frequent fevers?

A fever is the body temperature of 100.4° Fahrenheit or higher. If you experience several episodes of fever over a duration of time, it may indicate a recurrent fever. A recurrent fever is a type of fever that follows a pattern of appearing for a few days, subsiding, disappearing for a period of time while the person feels healthy, and then returning again. A classic fever generally occurs due to an infection or virus. Whereas recurrent fevers can occur without any viral or bacterial infection and may result in higher body temperatures. These fevers tend to occur repeatedly over time. They usually happen without a cause and in a pattern. Researchers believe them to be a main symptom of different periodic fever syndromes.

Additionally, a group of various conditions that can result in recurrent, unexplained fevers is termed as periodic fever syndrome. Three or more episodes of unexplained fever in a 6-month period, occurring at least 7 days apart will be considered as a periodic fever syndrome. These fevers are not a result of recognized autoimmune disorders or common infections. Researchers believe that autoinflammatory diseases or a genetic defect cause such fevers. Few examples of periodic fever syndromes include, Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF), tumor necrosis factor receptor associated periodic syndrome (TRAPS), Hyperimmunoglobulin D syndrome (HIDA), etc.

What to do in frequent fever?

Usually, doctors treat these like a typical fever. In cases, if the patient is suffering from periodic fever syndrome, there is no specific treatment to cure it. Doctors give such patients antipyretic drugs, lots of fluid and ask them to rest as much as possible. However, if you are experiencing frequent fevers, it is important to consult a medical professional to determine the underlying cause. Frequent fevers could be a symptom of an underlying health condition or infection that requires medical attention. Your doctor may perform tests or exams to diagnose the cause of your frequent fevers and recommend appropriate treatment options. In the meantime, it is important to stay hydrated and well-rested. This is to help your body fight off any infections or illnesses.
