Toothpaste can transport substances in the mouth that could be beneficial for both individual and population oral health. This is because they inhibit germs in the oral cavity. Since these essential daily oral care products with varying chemical formulations have demonstrated beneficial effects, this article summarises the significant aspects of therapeutic toothpastes.

What exactly is the purpose of toothpaste?

Toothpaste or dentifrices has been used as a cleaning agent since ancient times. Their use has resulted in significant improvements in the oral health of people all over the world. As a result, these dentifrices have evolved into more than just cosmetic products, becoming essential for maintaining oral health. There are two ingredients, however, that distinguish their mode of action. These important components are either abrasives or therapeutic agents. The dentifrices with higher abrasive agents are effective at removing dental stains and plaque. And such formulations failed to demonstrate any anticaries effect. Thus, the development of fluoride-based therapeutic toothpastes addressed this shortcoming.

What type of toothpaste can be used to prevent tooth cavity?

Fluoridated toothpaste has long been used to prevent tooth decay. Fluoride added to calcium-based abrasives has an anti-caries effect. This caries-prevention effect is caused by a temporary increase in fluoride concentration in saliva. This effect lasts only a few hours. Furthermore, fluorides may help to improve dental remineralization on clean surfaces, reducing demineralization caused by plaque biofilm remnants.

Please keep in mind that the widespread use of fluoridated water and fluoride dentifrices has been linked to fluorosis in populations exposed to both. The evidence for the correct fluoride concentration in toothpaste is limited. As a result, you should use therapeutic dentifrice only after consulting with your dentist.

Is there any toothpaste besides fluoride toothpaste?

Yes. Several co-adjuvant ingredients have been evaluated and are now available in a wide range of toothpaste formulations. Triclosan and stannous fluoride are two of these additives that can help with plaque, tartar, gum disease, and even bad breath. Furthermore, potassium-containing dentifrices aid in the treatment of dentine hypersensitivity. Furthermore, recent formulations containing ingredients like arginine, pyrophosphates, and zinc compounds have shown promising results in maintaining good oral hygiene.

How should a toothpaste be chosen?

While there are numerous ways to personalise toothpaste, there are two key factors to consider. To begin with, it is recommended that the dentifrice should bear the Seal of Acceptance. Second, make certain that it contains the proper ingredients. Please keep in mind that fluoridated toothpaste should only be used as directed. Thus, it is best to seek the advice of a dental professional.
