Uterine fibroids, also known as leiomyomas, can affect a woman in various ways. The impact of fibroids is dependent on its size, location, and the number. In this article, we will discuss about abnormal bleeding, whether all women with fibroids experience abnormal bleeding, the way fibroids cause bleeding and its treatment

What is abnormal bleeding?

Abnormal vaginal bleeding is a common concern among women. In this, bleeding occurs at irregular intervals, with a heavier or longer flow than normal. Abnormal bleeding can also include bleeding between periods, after sexual intercourse, and/or postmenopausal bleeding.

Additionally, a woman can experience abnormal bleeding or heavy menstrual bleeding due to various reasons. They include polyps, adenomyosis, irregular ovulation, blood-clotting disorders, medications, endometriosis, cancer, etc. Therefore, you must consult a doctor immediately if you experience any of these symptoms.

Does every woman with fibroids experience bleeding?

Not exactly. Fibroids can cause a variety of symptoms, one of which is abnormal bleeding. However, not every woman with fibroids will experience bleeding.

Fibroids can vary in size and location, and the symptoms will depend on that. Some fibroids may be small and located deep within the uterus and may not cause any symptoms at all. On the contrary, larger fibroids located closer to the uterus lining or outside the uterus can cause heavy or prolonged bleeding.

Additionally, fibroids can block the fallopian tubes or the cervix. This can lead to irregular periods, heavy bleeding, and cramping. However, not all fibroids are large enough or located in a position that would cause this kind of blockage.

In conclusion, not every woman with fibroids will experience bleeding. Factors such as the size and location of the fibroids can affect the likelihood of experiencing bleeding. Women who experience heavy or prolonged bleeding should seek medical attention to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment.

How do uterine fibroids cause bleeding?

There are several ways in which fibroids can cause bleeding. One possibility is that the fibroid is located within the uterine lining, also known as the endometrium. As the endometrium thickens and sheds during the menstrual cycle, the fibroid can disrupt the normal shedding process. This can also result in heavy or prolonged bleeding.

Another possibility is that the fibroid is located outside the uterus but is pressing on the endometrium. This pressure can also disrupt the normal shedding process and cause heavy or prolonged bleeding.

Additionally, fibroids may stimulate the growth of blood vessels, causing heavier or irregular periods and spotting between periods. Lastly, elevated levels of hormones called prostaglandins may lead to heavy bleeding.

How is abnormal bleeding due to fibroids treated?

When treating abnormal bleeding, a doctor will evaluate your medical history and family history, as well as conduct imaging and blood tests. With this, the cause of the bleeding can be determined, and treatment options are recommended. Factors such as your age, the severity of the bleeding, and whether you want to have children will determine the course of treatment appropriate for you.

Common medical treatment options for abnormal vaginal bleeding may include using birth control pills, hormone injections, or a hormone-releasing intra-uterine device (IUD). In some cases, surgery may be necessary to control bleeding or remove growths such as polyps or fibroids that are causing the bleeding. Common surgical treatment options include endometrial ablation, endometrial polyp removal, myomectomy, or hysterectomy.

It’s essential to work closely with your doctor to find the best treatment option for you based on your body requirements.
