Uterine fibroids are pretty common. In most cases, they often do not cause symptoms. However, in some cases, uterine fibroids can impair one’s quality of life. In this article, we discuss whether fibroids disappear on their own, the ways fibroids shrink and the cases in which a surgical intervention is necessary for a fibroid.

Can fibroids disappear on their own?

Sometimes. Fibroids can shrink or disappear on their own, especially during and after menopause, as hormonal levels decline during menopause and without these hormones, fibroids can’t grow. However, the shrinkage can take years, and some fibroids may not go away completely. If the fibroids are causing certain problems and do not shrink on their own, then medical interventions can aid in removing or shrinking the fibroids.

How can fibroids shrink?

Fibroids can shrink due to various factors. A few of them are as follows-

  1. Hormonal changes: Fibroids are hormone-sensitive and can shrink or disappear during and after menopause when hormone levels decline.
  2. Medical treatments: Medications such as Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists can reduce levels of estrogen and progesterone, leading to the shrinkage of fibroids. However, such medications cannot be used long-term because of the associated symptoms and bone loss.
  3. Minimally invasive procedures: Procedures such as uterine artery embolization (UAE) and focused ultrasound (FUS) can shrink fibroids by reducing blood flow to the fibroids.

When is surgery needed for fibroids?

In certain cases, where fibroids are causing symptoms such as heavy bleeding, pain, or pressure on the bladder or rectum, or medications do not improve such symptoms, surgery might be needed. Other than this, if fertility is hampered due to fibroids, then surgical removal of the fibroid is recommended. It is also recommended if cancer is susceptible. However, it is crucial to consult a healthcare provider to determine the best course of action for managing fibroids and to weigh the benefits and risks of surgery.
