Fibroids, also known as uterine leiomyomas, are a prevalent but insufficiently studied affliction that affects women primarily during their reproductive years. They are diagnosed in over 70% of white women and over 80% of women of African descent at some point in their lives. The impact of this disease on healthcare delivery and costs globally is significant. While the majority of women with fibroids do not exhibit symptoms, about 30% of them will experience severe symptoms. This article will elaborate if fibroids can cause pain and, if yes, how does it occur.

Can fibroids cause pain?

It is possible. Symptoms of fibroids can be unpredictable and vary depending on the size, number, and location of the fibroids. A less common symptom which a woman can experience due fibroids is pain. Pain may be intermittent or occur specifically during sexual activity or menstruation, and the nature of the discomfort may be sharp or a persistent, dull ache. While acute, severe pain is a less common symptom of fibroids, it may occur when a fibroid undergoes degeneration. Typically, the pain is concentrated in a specific area and typically resolves within two to four weeks. On the other hand, chronic pelvic pain can also develop, which is usually mild but constant and localized to a specific region.

How can fibroids lead to pain?

Fibroids can cause pain in several ways. The most common way is by causing heavy and prolonged menstrual bleeding, which can lead to painful cramping during periods. Fibroids can also cause pain and discomfort in the pelvic area, lower back, and abdomen, especially during sexual intercourse, bowel movements, or urination.

When fibroids grow large, they can pressure nearby organs, such as the bladder or rectum, leading to pain or discomfort. In some cases, fibroids can also press on nerves and blood vessels, causing pain in the nearby region.

Less commonly, when fibroids become too large, the blood vessels supplying the blood cannot meet the fibroid’s needs, they cause the death of the cells of the fibroid through a process called fibroid degeneration. This fibroid degeneration can cause the shrinking of the fibroid, leading to symptoms such as acute and sharp pain, heavy periods, etc.

If you are experiencing pain or discomfort related to fibroids, it’s important to consult your doctor to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment.
