Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection prevalent in tropical and subtropical climates worldwide, particularly in urban and semi-urban areas. The dengue virus is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, primarily Aedes aegypti. Symptoms range from mild fever to incapacitating high fever, with severe headaches, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pains, and rash. Severe dengue can lead to hemorrhagic fever, resulting in bleeding, blood plasma leakage, and potentially fatal shock (dengue shock syndrome). Prevention focuses on mosquito control and avoiding bites. There is no specific treatment for dengue; care is supportive, focusing on hydration and pain relief. Vaccines are being developed but are not yet widely available.
