Fact check: Is it possible to clean your organs with herbs?

Published on:
Can kitchen herbs effectively cleanse your organs?
Not really. While some kitchen herbs may offer minor cleansing benefits, they're not powerful enough to thoroughly clean your organs. The body has its own mechanisms for detoxification, primarily handled by the liver and kidneys. Adopting a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet, hydration, and regular exercise are more effective for supporting these natural detox processes than relying solely on kitchen herbs.

The Claim

In the Instagram video by the account health_tips4452, the claimant makes five assertions:

  1. Black raisins purportedly cleanse the liver within 15 days.
  2. Green fenugreek cleanse the kidneys within 10 days.
  3. Flaxseed cleanse the heart within a month.
  4. Almonds and walnuts cleanse the brain and rid it of toxins within two months.
  5. Honey, ginger, and lemon water protect the lungs from the effects of tobacco, gutkha, and smoking.

Fact Check

Is it possible to clean your organs?

Not really. In this  video you can hear the claimant repeatedly using the word ‘safai’. The term ‘safai’ ‘cleaning’ of organs is often applicable in pseudo medicine, but from a scientific standpoint, it’s misleading. Vital organs like brain, heart, liver and kidneys are designed to filter toxins and waste products from the body naturally. While adopting a healthy lifestyle with overall nutrition, regular exercise, and hydration can support the function of these organs, there isn’t a specific process for ‘cleaning’ them beyond what they already do. It’s essential to be cautious of detox or cleansing regimens that claim to clean vital organs without scientific evidence.

Does black raisin cleans your liver in 15 days?

There isn’t enough scientific evidence that says raisins can clean the organ liver in 15 days or any specific time frame. While there is research that says raisins extract  contain some nutrients and antioxidants that may benefit overall health. There isn’t substantial research to suggest that raisins with water have a significant detoxifying effect on the liver within 15 days.

Dietitian Harita

Dietitian Harita Adhvaryu said, “While the liver might assist patients with cholesterol issues, its role in liver detoxification remains uncertain. It’s important to emphasise that relying solely on raisin water may not be adequate for liver detoxification. A holistic approach, including a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle, is vital for supporting overall liver health.”

Does green fenugreek juices cleanse your kidney in 10 days?

There’s limited evidence to support the claim that green fenugreek juice can clean kidneys in a specific timeframe like 10 days. While fenugreek is known to have some potential health benefits, such as anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, there isn’t substantial research to suggest that it has a significant detoxifying effect on the kidneys within such a short period. While  searching  we found out that most of the research papers were of  fenugreek seeds helping in kidney toxicity.

Do flaxseed cleanse the heart in 1 month?

There’s no scientific evidence to support the idea that flaxseeds can clean the organ the heart in just one month. However, studies have shown that incorporating flaxseeds into your diet may have positive effects on heart health over time. Flaxseeds contain omega-3 fatty acids, fibre, and other nutrients that can help reduce inflammation, lower cholesterol levels, and improve blood pressure—all of which are beneficial for heart health. So while flaxseeds can be a part of a heart-healthy diet, it’s essential to maintain healthy lifestyle habits consistently for long-term heart health benefits.

Do almonds and walnuts cleanse and make your brain poison free in 2 months?

There’s no scientific evidence to suggest that soaked  almonds and walnuts can cleanse or detoxify the brain and make it ‘poison-free’ within a specific timeframe like two months. However, almonds and walnuts are nutrient-rich foods that can contribute to overall brain health when consumed as part of a balanced diet.

These nuts contain beneficial nutrients such as healthy fats, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, which support brain function and may help protect against cognitive decline over time.

Incorporating almonds and walnuts into your diet as part of a healthy lifestyle can have long-term benefits for brain health. But it’s important to remember that there is no single food or quick fix that can instantly cleanse the brain. Consistently making healthy dietary choices and lifestyle habits are key to promoting optimal brain health.

Dr Swati Dave, Phd in Food and Nutrition

Dr. Swati Dave explains, “There are no specific foods that can cleanse the brain and heart. However, foods like flaxseeds, almonds, and walnuts are beneficial for overall health due to their functional properties. Their nutritional content, including dietary fiber, omega 3-6 fatty acids, and amino acids, can vary based on consumption quantity and quality of the seeds.”

Does honey, ginger and lemon help clean lungs?

While honey, ginger, and lemon are often promoted for their health benefits, there’s no scientific evidence to suggest that they can cleanse the lungs specifically from the effects of smoking tobacco or gutkha. Smoking tobacco and using gutkha can cause significant damage to the lungs and increase the risk of respiratory problems, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer.

However, honey, ginger, and lemon do have some health-promoting properties that may support overall lung health. Honey has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, ginger has anti-inflammatory effects and may help with respiratory issues, and lemon is a good source of vitamin C, which can support immune function.

Pulmonologist

Dr. Sarthak Rastogi, DNB (Pulmonology) says, “Discovering a diet capable of detoxifying or purifying the lungs of a smoker is as elusive as finding the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. So far, there is no substantiated evidence to support the notion that any dietary regimen can reverse the lung damage caused by smoking or exposure to pollution. While these ingredients may offer some benefits, they cannot reverse the damage caused by smoking tobacco or gutkha. The most effective way to protect lung health is to quit smoking and avoid the use of tobacco products altogether. Additionally, maintaining a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet, regular exercise, and avoiding exposure to air pollutants can further support lung health.”

Dr. Rastogi further emphasises, “Quitting smoking immediately is the only way to truly protect the lungs. While a diet high in antioxidants may offer some benefits, active smoking is significantly more harmful and cannot be counteracted by any remedy. Adopting a well-rounded diet with ample vitamins and minerals, avoiding excessive fat and processed foods, maintaining a healthy weight, refraining from smoking or maintaining a smoke-free lifestyle, and incorporating regular exercise are crucial for optimal lung function.”
