Quick Take

Social media is full of videos that guarantee thick and long hair through homemade remedies using coconut oil and other ingredients. Given the complex nature of hair growth, which majorly depends on the genetics of an individual, DIY remedies may not prove to be beneficial always. We fact checked one such claim and found it to be mostly false.

The Claim

A Facebook reel has claimed that you can get thick and long hair if you regularly apply a concoction of coconut oil and several herbs and seeds, namely ー fenugreek seeds, rice, aloe vera gel, flax seeds, black pepper, tea powder, aliv seeds. The post tells us to mix all the dry ingredients and then boil it in coconut oil for five minutes. Upon cooling, it can be sieved, stored and applied daily.

Fact Check

Can a homemade coconut oil concoction give you thick and long hair?

Not exactly. Hair growth has more to it than just topical application of coconut oil concoction. While coconut oil has numerous benefits proven for skincare and haircare, it alone cannot guarantee a 100% result for thick and long hair, as mentioned in the claim. There exists a complex interplay of factors which affect hair growth. The factors that can affect hair growth are diet (can cause nutritional deficiencies which can lead to hair loss ー iron deficiency causes hair loss), lifestyle, stress, ongoing medication, hormonal imbalance, sudden and significant weight loss, trauma, certain diseases and disorders, age, pregnancy and most importantly genetics. If you are experiencing hair thinning or hair loss we suggest you consult a qualified healthcare professional for your concern.

Does coconut oil address underlying causes of hair loss?

Coconut oil gets a lot of hype for its hair benefits, but it might not be the magic solution for hair loss. Hair loss stems from various issues like genetics, hormones, health conditions, diet, and stress. While a good coconut oil hair massage (regular and consistent) can hydrate the scalp, encourage hair growth, and reduce breakage, it doesn’t tackle these underlying causes directly. Still, by keeping your scalp healthy and providing nutrients, coconut oil could indirectly help with hair growth and possibly lessen some types of hair loss. Remember, it’s crucial to identify and treat the root cause of hair loss alongside using coconut oil as part of your overall hair care routine.

How does hair growth occur?

Hair growth follows a cycle with three primary phases: anagen, catagen, and telogen. During the anagen phase, hair actively grows from the root, usually lasting several years. The catagen phase signals a transition where hair growth slows, and the follicle starts to shrink. In the telogen phase, hair rests for a few months before shedding, which is a normal part of the cycle with individuals typically shedding 50 to 100 hairs per day. However, deviations from this cycle can lead to conditions like alopecia or telogen effluvium, where hair follicles undergo abnormal patterns of growth or shedding. Factors like genetics, hormones, diet, stress, and overall health can influence these conditions, as well as external factors like hair care practices and environmental stressors. Understanding this cycle and its variations is crucial for maintaining healthy hair and addressing hair loss issues effectively.

What do experts say about hair growth with home remedies?

Dr Sachin Gupta, Amrita Hospital

Dr Sachin Gupta (MBBS and MD in Dermatology and Venereology from AIIMS Delhi) an experienced dermatologist at Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, highlights that, “There’s no scientific backing to the notion that a blend of coconut oil, some herbs and seeds can increase hair growth significantly. While each ingredient is believed to offer health benefits, attributing accelerated hair growth solely to this mixture is baseless.”

He emphasises that hair growth is influenced by various factors such as genetics, hormones, diet, and overall health. There’s no quick-fix solution to speeding up hair growth. Dr. Gupta suggests maintaining a healthy diet and good hair care practices for optimal hair health. In case of underlying medical conditions, consulting a dermatologist is recommended. Hair typically grows at a rate of 1-1.5 cm per month, indicating the gradual nature of the process. He advises against relying on unverified remedies and encourages seeking professional advice for genuine concerns regarding hair thinning and hair loss, emphasising the importance of a holistic approach for desired outcomes. Delay in professional consultation may lead to missed opportunities of early and effective treatment that can stall or prevent hair loss.

What lifestyle changes can help prevent hair loss and promote hair thickness?

Making certain lifestyle changes can significantly contribute to promoting hair thickness. First and foremost, maintaining a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients such as vitamins A, C, D, E, and biotin can support overall hair health. But please note, your doctor is the best person to decide your supplements and its dosage; so do not hesitate to consult one!

Regular exercise improves blood circulation, which in turn, nourishes hair follicles. Avoiding harsh hair treatments, such as excessive heat styling and chemical treatments, can prevent damage and breakage. Managing stress through relaxation techniques like meditation or yoga can also help prevent hair loss, as stress is known to contribute to hair thinning. Adequate sleep is crucial, as it allows the body to repair and regenerate cells, including those responsible for hair growth. Additionally, staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water ensures that hair follicles receive adequate moisture for healthy growth. A good head massage (regular and consistent) and scalp treatments can help too, provided your nutrition and genetics support the same.
