Fact Check: Is cranberry juice effective for treating stomach ulcers?

Can cranberry juice be used to treat stomach ulcers?
No, not right now. Cranberry juice might support the conventional 'triple therapy' for treating stomach ulcers. This is due to the fact that its polyphenols aid in the eradication of H. pylori. Nevertheless, cranberry juice is a more secure substitute that, while it is not a proven treatment for stomach ulcers, may help relieve or prevent them.

Quick Take

Rating

According to a YouTube video, cranberry juice can be used to treat stomach ulcers. When we fact-checked the accuracy of the claim, we found that it was Mostly False.

The Claim

Five all-natural ways to treat stomach ulcers are listed in the YouTube video

“You Can Cure Stomach Ulcer With 5 Foods,” with an emphasis on cranberry juice consumption.

Fact Check

What exactly is a stomach ulcer?

The lining of the stomach or small intestine can become sore from stomach ulcers. To aid in food digestion and ward off microbes, the stomach secretes a potent acid. The stomach additionally secretes a thick layer of mucus to shield the body tissues from this acid. The stomach acid can harm the stomach tissue, leading to ulcers if this mucus layer becomes worn down and ceases to function properly.

The two main contributors to stomach ulcers are H. pylori bacteria and a class of painkillers known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Besides that, a lot of causative factors, including genetics, smoking, stress, specific foods, and even the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, can induce an overabundance of stomach acid. In most cases, these lesions cause discomfort, indigestion, nausea, vomiting, bloating, bloody or tarry stools, chest pain, and even weakness. While the pain and indigestion that these lesions frequently cause can be treated with prescription drugs, a person’s diet and way of life may also need to be modified.

Does the cranberry juice treatment work for stomach ulcers?

No, not right away. The currently available triple antimicrobial therapy, which consists of two antibiotics and a proton pump inhibitor, can get rid of H. pylori. However, there is still a need for the ideal therapy. Notably, the development of strains that are resistant to one or more antibiotics is a crucial indicator that a novel course of treatment is required. One such organic alternative is cranberry juice.

However, certain studies have demonstrated that the components of cranberry juice inhibit the adhesion of a variety of microbial pathogens, including Helicobacter pylori. This is due to the fact that the researchers discovered that compounds in cranberry juice inhibited the growth of three different strains of H. pylori. Despite the fact that this effect was significant in naturally infected humans, the rate of eradication was still much lower than that of conventional triple therapy. Furthermore, a recent study discovered that its polyphenol compounds have the ability to eradicate H. pylori and could support the conventional triple therapy used for the medical management of stomach ulcers. More research is required to support the use specifically because the effect is stronger in females than in males

General Physician

When we asked General Physician, Dr. Kashyap Dakshini, about whether cranberry juice could be used to treat stomach ulcers, he responded that there is some evidence from some randomised trials that suggests regular cranberry juice consumption may help potentiate the suppression of H. pylori infection, which is known to cause peptic ulcers in susceptible populations. However, more research would be necessary to confirm its use in the treatment of stomach ulcers.

Therefore, it should be stressed that a person may be able to find relief from or prevent the formation of ulcers in the future using some home remedies. But in order to determine the cause and receive medical care, people should visit their doctor. An ulcer treatment strategy can only be developed by a doctor.

How should stomach ulcers be handled?

One should see a physician if they suspect they have a stomach ulcer. The ‘test-and-treat’ strategy might be used by the physician if they believe the stomach ulcer is caused by the H. pylori bacteria. In this method, a non-invasive test for H. pylori infection—such as a urea breath test or stool test is conducted, and if the bacteria are found, they are eliminated.
Once the cause of the ulcer has been identified, the doctor will attempt to treat the symptoms by shielding the ulcer from acid while it heals. The treatment involves either prescribed medication or surgical intervention. Surgery might be an option in some situations, such as when the ulcer keeps coming back, won’t heal, bleeds, or keeps food from leaving the stomach.

THIP MEDIA TAKE: We conclude that cranberry juice could be supportive for conventional triple therapy employed in the medical management of stomach ulcers. Furthermore, cranberry juice a safer option could play relieving or a preventive role for stomach ulcers but is not an established treatment for stomach ulcers. Thus, the assertion is mostly false.
