The Claim

An Instagram post reads, “ Applying curd with rose water also brightens the skin. It will also help to whiten the skin. Not only this, by applying this paste the problem of pimples, and spots also goes away.”

Fact Check

How does acne occur?

Acne occurs when the body produces too much sebum, an oil that prevents the skin from drying out. Sebum and dead skin cells congregate in a pore. An acne lesion or pimple may develop where the clogging is present.

Teenagers are particularly affected by the role that hormones play in the development of acne. The main contributing factor may be the high testosterone levels that occur during puberty. Acne in women may also be brought on by hormonal changes related to pregnancy or the menstrual cycle. Acne risk may rise around menopause as a result of declining oestrogen levels. conditions like PCOS that affect hormone levels. However, progesterone’s function is still unknown. In addition, hormones such as insulin, glucocorticoids, and insulin-like growth factors may also have an impact on the development of skin acne.

Can the concoction of curd and rose water brighten skin and remove pimples and spots?

Not exactly. There is no conclusive evidence to prove that the mixture of curd and rose can help to brighten skin and remove pimples and spots. However, both of these ingredients have beneficial effects on the skin but more research is needed to confirm the efficacy of this concoction.

Rose water or rose petal extract has anti‐inflammatory activity because of its antioxidant activity. Similarly, research has indicated that it has skin whitening and anti-wrinkle formation activity by regulating intracellular signalling, supporting its utility as an ingredient for skin whitening and anti-wrinkle cosmetic products.

Additionally, fermented dairy products, such as yogurt has indicated towards being beneficial for the skin. However, the role of topical curd application in treating acne and removing spots still needs further research.

Dr. Parwaaz Matharoo

Dr Parwaaz Matharoo, MBBS, MD (Dermatology) comments, “ During the Cleopatra era, the famous milk bath ritual became the way to brighter glowy skin. There are a few recommendations that can help you to reduce unwelcome pigmentation. Advisory before using any kind of ubtan is to always prepare yourself for unfriendly outcomes.

Milk and curd do their magic in reducing suntan because of its star ingredient i.e. lactic acid which is an alpha hydroxy acid ( AHA ) that causes exfoliation, reduces pigmentation and improves skin texture. As they say when there’s a but take caution while pursuing it. Milk and curd can exacerbate acne in predisposed individuals. For promising results, Dermatologist’s assistance is recommended.”

Remember, one concoction cannot give all the said results to every patient. Further studies are needed to prove this mixture’s efficacy. There are several factors which are involved here.

The patient’s age, development stage, type, appearance, prior unsatisfactory treatments, and any spots or scars left over from the acne all play a role in determining the acne treatment plan. Physical therapies, photodynamic therapy, topical therapies, and systemic therapies are the most frequently used forms of treatment.

Similarly, for scars, there is not a single treatment regime that fits everyone. The treatment depends upon your scar type, skin type and the severity of the scarring. Usually, either one or a combination of various approaches might improve the appearance of your skin. A few approaches dermatologists use for acne scars are dermabrasion, chemical peels, laser resurfacing, steroid injections, soft tissue fillers, etc.

Dermatologist

Dr. Soumya Sachdeva, Consultant Dermatologist suggests, “Rose water has anti-inflammatory properties which can soothe the skin and decrease redness of the skin. Thus, it may be beneficial in treating acne, however, not all skin types may tolerate the application of rose water on the face, due to the development of contact dermatitis.

Additionally, curd also has anti-inflammatory properties but I wouldn’t recommend applying it on the face as firstly many people may not tolerate its application and develop sensitivity to it and a red itchy rash- contact dermatitis may develop. Further in many individuals, it may make your skin dull, and dry and cause irritation and peeling of skin so I wouldn’t recommend its use.”

In conclusion, it must be noted that the mixture of curd and rose water may have some benefits for the skin, but it’s important to note that individual results can vary, and it may not work for everyone.
