What happens when cavity is present between two teeth?
Cavity between two teeth, also called interproximal dental cavities, can lead to tooth decay. Due to the decay in the teeth, the patient may experience tooth sensitivity or extreme pain and difficulty in chewing food. Since dental decay and cavities can only be treated by a dentist, you should seek immediate medical assistance if you experience these symptoms.

Openings between teeth where dental tissue has deteriorated are referred to as interproximal dental cavities. This is commonly disregarded due to its placement. However, if a person is sensitive to cold or sweetness, it may be a result of dental decay. As they advance, they might even make chewing uncomfortable or painful. This decay occurs when the dental cavity breaks through the enamel and enters the dentin. This is known as dentin exposure. As a result, the dental specialist can use radiography to identify this condition.

How does the dental cavity develop?

Dental cavities are relatively a prevalent issue today. The primary reason is the sticky bacterial plaque’s acidic composition. The demineralisation of enamel is the effect of these acids. Once the enamel is destroyed, the softer dentin, which is more prone to dental decay, exposes to bacterial invasion. At this stage, tooth sensitivity becomes noticeable. If dental decay persists, it eventually gets to the vascular pulp. This causes inflammation of the pulp. Thus, the discomfort or pain starts to set in at this point.

How is the dental cavity between adjacent teeth addressed?

A tooth cavity that has formed between adjacent teeth can be treated, depending on the extent of the decay. One of the treatment options is remineralisation for early enamel cavities. The affected enamel can be recalcified primarily using fluoride-based products. The dentist can always remove and restore the advanced decay. The infected pulp must be removed. Cleaning, disinfecting, and filling the area are steps in this process. Root canals are frequently followed by crowns. A crown is a tooth’s protective covering. An extraction is always the last resort if there are no other choices. There is a chance that the infection will spread from the tooth to the jawbone. It is possible to fill the space created by the missing tooth with an artificial tooth.

However, preventing dental decay is the most effective approach. This calls for regular visits to the dentist. Brushing, flossing, and interdental cleaning every day. Moreover, limit your consumption of sugary foods and beverages. Avoiding alcohol and smoking can have positive impacts.
