Heavy consumption of alcohol can lead to the deficiency of Vitamin D, a nutrient that helps in building and maintaining strong bones.
Vitamin D is synthesized by the body through sunlight. In some foods, Vitamin D is naturally present. However, consumption of too much alcohol can interfere with the ability of body to absorb Vitamin D.
Alcohol interferes with the conversion of Vitamin D (both endogenously produced and dietary) into its active metabolites. As a result, those who consume alcohol heavily have low blood levels of activated Vitamin D.
Also, heavy consumption of alcohol harms the intestinal tract linings (which absorb nutrients from the foods). Even if heavy drinkers eat nutrient-rich food, they fail to get the full benefit of nutrients, including Vitamin D.
