Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder in which clusters of nerve cells, or neurons, in the brain sometimes signal abnormally and cause seizures. All seizures are not epilepsy but in all epilepsy, there are seizures. Epilepsy is a disorder while a seizure is a symptom of the disorder. It is important to understand the cause of the seizure to differentiate between epilepsy and seizure.
According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, several neurons (as many as 500 times a second) fire (signal) simultaneously, much faster than normal in a seizure. The surge of excessive and simultaneous electrical activity causes involuntary movements, sensations, emotions, and behaviors. The temporary disturbance of normal neuronal activity can also lead to a loss of awareness.
