UTIs happen when bacteria or fungi from the skin or rectum enter the urethra and infect the urinary tract. UTI mostly affects the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra.

The most common type of UTI is a bladder infection (cystitis) and kidney infection (pyelonephritis). A research paper published in 2018 informs that women have a lifetime risk of developing UTI is 60% which is only 13% for men.

Is UTI dangerous?

Can be. If UTI remains unnoticed and spreads to the kidney, the condition can become dangerous to treat. The National Health Service (NHS) website informs that the infection can mix with the blood after infecting the kidneys to affect all the organs of the body.

Is UTI infection curable?

Possible. As UTI is spread by microbes, the infection can be cured completely. Following the prescription given by the doctor, people can cure their condition completely. A course of antibiotics can help clear the symptoms of UTI within a few days. However, for some people, the condition can reoccur.

A research paper published in 2013 informs that the infection can happen again when the body is reinfected by the same pathogen. This has been further confirmed in an article published by Harvard Health informs that some women are prone to developing frequent UTIs. The article discusses one example of Escherichia coli bacteria that causes UTI, which often spreads faster in pre-menopausal women. Also, in post-menopausal women, certain body changes make women prone to infection.

What are the symptoms of UTI?

UTIs often don’t show symptoms. However, some people can have a strong urge to urinate, a burning sensation while urinating, passing small amounts of urine frequently, cloudy-looking urine, red, bright pink, or cola-colored urine, strong-smelling urine, and pelvic pain.

Can a man get UTI?

Yes. Males can get UTI. A research paper published in 2018 shows that each and every woman has 60% lifetime risk of developing UT which is only 13% for men. Women are at greater risk of developing UTI because their urethra is shorter and closer to the vagina.
