There are a number of complications of uncontrolled hypertension. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that it can lead to increasing risk of heart failure, heart attack, kidney disease, stroke, etc. The World Health Organization also states that hypertension can damage the heart. Very high blood pressure hardens the arteries. This eventually decreases the flow of blood and oxygen from the heart. This elevated pressure and reduced blood flow can cause chest pain or angina. The blockage of blood supply to the heart can lead to the death of heart muscle cells, which can result in a heart attack.
Moreover, high blood pressure can lead to heart failure or arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat). Lastly, hypertension can also burst or block arteries that supply blood and oxygen to the brain, causing a stroke. Aside from damaging the heart, it can also cause kidney damage, leading to kidney failure.
The Indian Medical Association also lists the most typical complications of uncontrolled hypertension or high blood pressure. Some of them are coronary artery disease, stroke, heart failure, peripheral vascular disease, retinal haemorrhage, etc.
