Can Vitamin D deficiency lead to kidney problems?

People having Vitamin D deficiency are more than twice as likely to develop albuminuria over a period of time (as per the American Journal of Kidney Diseases)[1]. Albuminuria, a type of protein in the urine, is an early sign of kidney disease. Vitamin D deficiency can affect the kidneys of people.

The kidney plays an important role in making Vitamin D useful to the body. It converts Vitamin D to the active form of Vitamin D that the body needs. Kidneys of people having Vitamin D deficiency cannot convert a required amount of Vitamin D needed by the body.

Low levels of Vitamin D can be found in people having chronic kidney disease. Injured kidneys couldn’t convert Vitamin D into its active form. Vitamin D can be obtained by sunlight exposure, various foods and in the form of supplements.
