Are bananas good for spine health?

It may. There is scant evidence available online that suggests that the magnesium in bananas can improve spine health. The available evidence mostly talks about magnesium supplements which are not the same as eating bananas.

A 2013 study analysed the impact of magnesium given orally to people with chronic low back pain. This study confirmed that magnesium can reduce the extent of back pain. Another 2020 study confirmed ‘Magnesium intake adjusted for body weight appears protective for chronic pain’.

Bananas are also rich in antioxidants which reduces the decline in forced expiratory volume (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC) – an abnormal level of both can indicate reduced spine health in certain cases.

Since diet plays an essential role in maintaining overall health, we can consider bananas as good for spine health as it contains magnesium. But the available evidence does not confirm the quantity of bananas one should eat per body mass index to improve spine health.
