The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) continues to be a major global health risk to women, particularly concerning cervical cancer. Vaccination is one of the most effective preventive methods available. For certain age groups, the effectiveness is optimal. The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a powerful enemy that frequently leads to cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is more likely to result from certain types of this virus group, which transmits through sexual contact. Recognition of the connection between HPV and cervical cancer brings the urgency for preventive measures like the cervical cancer vaccine.

The Science Behind Early Vaccination

When it comes to cervical cancer vaccines for children between the ages of 9 and 14, you can check this scientific evidence. This time frame supports the body’s natural growth and provides an enhanced immune system response. Strengthening the immune system in puberty ensures a more enduring defence against HPV, which is a strategic advantage. Early vaccination maximises the body’s capacity to produce a potent defence against HPV. It takes advantage of the immune system’s responsiveness. This strategy strives to build a more powerful defence against cervical cancer in addition to preventing HPV infection.

The Grey Area

Swarnita Sahu

Contrary to common belief, medical experts assert that 9 to 14-year-old girls are not the most vulnerable group to cervical cancer. Dr. Swarnita Sahu, Radiation Oncologist, emphasises this point, stating, “9 to 14-year-old girls are not the most vulnerable group.” She further explains why cervical cancer vaccines in India target this age group, “But still, we vaccinate in this age group because by vaccinating at an early age, we get a more robust immune response, and it also provides a longer time to achieve completion of vaccination before potential exposure to HPV.”

Things to Know about Cervical Cancer Vaccines

Dr Rakesh Sharma - Oncologist

While talking about the significance of vaccine for Cervical Cancer, Oncologist Dr Rakesh Kumar Sharma, Max Hospital Saket, Delhi, says, “Cervical cancer infection is usually acquired in young age. This infection is preventable with vaccination which is currently easily available and is recommended from the age of 9 to 26 years or before the onset of sexual activity. However, WHO recommends vaccination for age group of 9 to 14 years. This way we can say that seed of cervical cancer is sown in adolescence which manifest at a later age with a deadly disease.”

There are various types of vaccines available in the market to treat cervical cancer. We have enlisted them underneath for your common knowledge.

  • Gardasil
  • Cervarix
  • CERVAVAC

The last one is developed in India and can prevent four different varieties of HPV. They function by stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies against high-risk HPV strains. These are mostly preventive measures.
The focus on pushing the cervical cancer vaccine reflects a commitment to the future. The commitment to not just treat but prevent as the field of medicine continues to progress. The ongoing campaigns dispel myths, enlighten the public, and emphasise early action. They are a part of a holistic strategy for preventing cervical cancer.
