A social media post on X, formerly Twitter claims that WHO’s chief Tedros is still unvaccinated as of September 2023. This post contained a video in which Tedros discussed his vaccination status during an interview. The accompanying caption of the post states that ‘The Head of the World Health Organization admits he has not received the COVID vaccine’.
Fact Check
Is it true that WHO’s chief still unvaccinated as of September 2023?
No. There is no evidence to confirm that the WHO’s chief is still unvaccinated as of September 2023. We have previously found a similar claim circulating on social media in August 2022, which related to the same video featuring Tedros, as mentioned in the claim within this story. While attempting this fact-check story, we realized that social media posts referring to this same video lack the necessary context for users to understand Tedros’ vaccination status as of September 2023.
In our previous story, we have shown that the video clip in question is extracted from an interview with Tedros, conducted on June 12, 2021, by Jon Cohen, a writer for the publication Science. In the clip shared on X, Tedros, originally from eastern Africa, mentioned that he delayed his vaccination in protest of the delay in COVID-19 vaccination for people living in Africa and other low-income regions. This video clip is sourced from the HBO Originals documentary titled ‘How to Survive a Pandemic.’ A transcript of the interview indicates that Tedros mentioned receiving his vaccination in 2021.
Evidence confirming Tedros’ vaccination in May 2021, can be found on his official account on the X platform.
