The Claim

A health blog by the name thehealthsite.com claimed in their blog that soaked fenugreek seed cures piles.

Fact Check

What are piles?

Piles, or haemorrhoids, occur when the blood vessels around the rectum and bottom become swollen, causing pain and discomfort. Common symptoms include itching, pain, lumps near the anus, bleeding, or protrusion of the hemorrhoid.

The condition arises due to increased pressure in the lower rectum, often caused by factors such as constipation, heavy lifting, chronic diarrhoea, or straining during bowel movements. Pregnancy, ageing, obesity, and dietary habits also contribute.

Doctors typically recommend dietary changes to prevent  piles, encouraging  the consumption of fibre -rich foods to soften stool and ease passage. Adequate hydration is also important. However, it’s crucial to consult a healthcare professional to determine the appropriate fibre and fluid intake based on individual factors such as weight, health status, activity level, and geographical location.

Can diet help cure piles?

The outcome isn’t definite, as it hinges on the current stage of your piles. However, diet adjustments can alleviate pain and symptoms. Medical professionals commonly recommend dietary changes to either cure or manage piles. Consuming fiber-rich foods softens stool and facilitates easier passage. Hydration, through water and liquids, aids the digestion of dietary fiber. It’s crucial to consult a doctor to determine the appropriate daily intake of fiber and fluids, considering factors like body mass index, health status, activity level, and location.

Gastro

Dr. Sharad Malhotra, Gastroenterologist at Akash Hospital in Delhi, talked about  the significance of dietary adjustments in managing piles symptoms. He said, “The inclusion of whole grains, legumes, fruits with skins, and fiber-rich foods is important to prevent constipation.” He cautioned against processed foods high in fats and carbs. Additionally, Dr. Malhotra outlined treatment options such as increasing fibre intake, using laxatives, avoiding constipation-inducing medications, and undergoing medical procedures like injections or surgery to address swollen veins.

We previously debunked fact checks related to piles  where the claimant claimed that a mixture of lemon and milk cures piles and ginger honey onion cures piles. Though both of the claims didn’t have any strong evidence it is important to trust claims which have strong scientific roots.

Does eating soaked fenugreek seeds help cure piles?

While soaked fenugreek seeds are often used for their potential health benefits, there is limited scientific evidence to support their efficacy in curing piles. Fenugreek seeds contain soluble fibre, which can help soften stool and promote regular bowel movements, potentially easing symptoms associated with piles such as constipation. Additionally, fenugreek seeds possess anti-inflammatory properties that may provide some relief from pain and discomfort associated with piles, but  it is unlikely to cure piles on its own.

Dietitian

Kamna Chauhan, a dietician, emphasizes that while diet alone may not cure piles, it can alleviate symptoms. Consuming fiber-rich foods can soften stool, easing passage and reducing pain associated with piles. Adequate hydration aids the effectiveness of dietary fiber in promoting digestive health.

What are the common side effects one can get by eating soaked fenugreek seed?

Common side effects of consuming soaked fenugreek seeds may include:

  1. Gastrointestinal discomfort: Some individuals may experience bloating, gas, or abdominal discomfort after consuming fenugreek seeds, especially if they are not accustomed to high-fibre foods.
  2. Diarrhoea: The high fibre content in fenugreek seeds can have a laxative effect, leading to loose stools or diarrhoea in some people.
  3. Allergic reactions: Fenugreek seeds can trigger allergic reactions in sensitive individuals, resulting in symptoms such as itching, hives, swelling, or difficulty breathing.
  4. Hypoglycemia: Fenugreek seeds have been reported to lower blood sugar levels, which can be problematic for individuals with diabetes or those taking medication to regulate blood sugar levels. It is important for such individuals to monitor their blood sugar levels closely while consuming fenugreek seeds.
  5. Interference with medications: Fenugreek seeds may interact with certain medications, including blood thinners, diabetes medications, and hormone therapies, potentially affecting their effectiveness or increasing the risk of side effects.

It’s essential to consume fenugreek seeds in moderation especially if you have underlying health conditions or are taking medications, to avoid any adverse effects.
