Quick Take

A social media post claims that Honey and Cinnamon together can cure a long list of diseases such as Cancer, Arthritis, etc. We fact-checked and found this claim to be Mostly False.

The Claim

A social media post describes a video captioned “Boiled Cinnamon And Honey Is The Cure For Cancer, Arthritis, Cholesterol And Many More Health problems.”

Fact-Check

What are the benefits of consuming honey?

Honey has several potential health benefits and plays a role in many home remedies and alternative medicine treatments. It has high antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Honey can help treat wounds, coughs, and upper respiratory conditions. It is also believed to improve gut health.

What are the benefits of consuming Cinnamon?

Cinnamon primarily contains vital oils and other derivatives, such as cinnamaldehyde, cinnamic acid, and cinnamate. In addition to being an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory,  antimicrobial, lipid-lowering, and cardiovascular-disease-lowering compound, it is also said to help in lowering blood pressure and blood sugar.

Can there be any side effects of consuming Honey?

Yes. Consuming too much honey may cause adverse effects due to its high sugar and calorie content. Few people may be allergic to honey which can cause an allergic reaction to them.

Can there be any side effects of consuming Cinnamon?

Yes. Since Cinnamon is a rich source of coumarin, consuming too much of it may cause liver toxicity and damage. Furthermore, studies on animal have shown that eating too much coumarin may increase the risk of certain cancers. Therefore, it is generally safe to use it in small amounts as a spice.

Can Honey and Cinnamon be combined to cure a long list of diseases?

No. Even though honey and cinnamon have a lot of medicinal benefits on their own, there is insufficient medical substantiation that the mixture of honey and cinnamon can cure diseases, such as arthritis, cancer, etc. According to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, labels must adhere to the full context of the particular food they describe, and foods cannot establish a relationship between a substance or disease-related condition unless the FDA authorizes it.

The FDA states that “Health claims in food labelling are claims that have been reviewed by FDA and are allowed on food products to show that a food or food component may reduce the risk of a disease or a health-related condition. Such claims are supported by scientific evidence and may be used on conventional foods and dietary supplements to characterize a relationship between a substance (a specific food component or a specific food) and a disease or health-related condition (e.g., high blood pressure).”

Moreover, the FDA’s list of authorised Health Claims That Meet Significant Scientific Agreement doesn’t include the benefits of Honey and Cinnamon in curing diseases such as Cancer, Arthritis, etc.

Therefore, the claim that the synergistic effect of Honey and Cinnamon cures a long list of ailments such as Cancer, Arthritis, etc., lacks scientific evidence and will be considered mostly false until it is backed up by conclusive evidence.
