Fact Check
Can avocado seeds cure tooth and gum pain?
Not exactly. While anecdotal evidence suggests the potential benefits of avocado seeds for dental ailments, more rigorous scientific research is needed to confirm these findings.
Avocado seeds may hold promise as a natural remedy for toothache and gum pain due to their anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties. However, more research is needed to fully assess their efficacy and safety. Until more conclusive evidence is available, avocado seeds should not be considered a substitute for professional dental care.
Dr. Arnab Mondal, Paediatric dental surgeon from Kolkata, West Bengal comments on this by stating, “I am not aware of any association between avocado seeds and tooth pain. In general, we use clove as a herbal remedy for tooth pain. Also, according to the literature, avocado seeds may be used to extract Ethanol, which when given in proper concentration can reduce bacteria P.Gingivalis, the bacteria which is responsible for a number of infections in tooth and root canals. So, in conclusion, avocado seeds may not have any effect on pain but may indirectly reduce bacteria and in the long term reduce infections.”
Avocado seeds contain tannins, flavonoids, and other compounds that exhibit anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. These properties could potentially help reduce inflammation and pain associated with toothaches and gum disease.
Additionally, they are also rich in antioxidants, which can help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. This antioxidant activity could potentially contribute to the healing process of dental tissues.
Dr. Pooja Bhardwaj, BDS, says, “We need to understand that there can be multiple reasons for a toothache. Suppressing the pain and not seeking a medical consultation can lead to irreversible loss. Suggestions like these are common home remedies and may give varying degrees of pain relief. But these are not medically proven treatments. Moreover, a few unproven remedies can actually harm the enamel of your teeth.”
It is important to note that avocado seeds should not be considered a cure for toothache or gum disease. While they may provide temporary relief from pain, they do not address the underlying causes of dental problems. Consulting a dentist to diagnose and treat the root cause of the pain is crucial for long-term oral health.
