The Claim

@radhidevlukia posted an Instagram video discussing a skin beauty tonic made of chia seeds, bay leaf, and anise seeds. The caption suggests that the tonic can provide a “beauty glow” and mentions the antioxidant-rich properties of star anise and bay leaves, which are said to help keep the skin tight and plump due to their astringent properties. Additionally, the caption states that chia seeds aid in collagen production and are rich in vitamins that support skin health. Followers are encouraged to try the tonic and share their thoughts.

Fact Check

Does  star anise and bay leaf help keep your skin tight and plump?

While star anise, bay leaf, and chia seeds may contribute to overall skin health, there’s limited direct evidence to skin tightening and plumping. These ingredients offer some benefits to the skin like helps against acne, inflammation, and hyper pigmentation but achieving tight and plump skin also depends on genetics, diet, skincare routine, hydration, and lifestyle. Incorporating a variety of nutrient-rich foods and beverages into your diet, along with proper skin care practices, can support skin health. While these beverages may be part of a holistic approach to skincare, they’re just one aspect of a comprehensive regimen.

Does chia seeds help in collagen production?

Well there were no research papers that concluded the stimulation of collagen. Chia seeds don’t directly stimulate collagen formation but offer nutrients that indirectly support it. Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, they reduce inflammation, aiding skin health. Antioxidants like vitamin E in chia seeds protect against free radicals, preserving collagen. Additionally, their protein content provides amino acids crucial for collagen synthesis. While chia seeds alone won’t spur collagen production, their inclusion in a diet can promote overall skin health. Maintaining collagen levels requires a holistic approach, encompassing various nutrients, skincare practices, and lifestyle habits for optimal skin integrity and elasticity.

Are chia seeds rich in vitamins?

Chia seeds are not particularly rich in vitamins compared to some other foods. While they do contain small amounts of certain vitamins, such as vitamin B and vitamin E, their main nutritional benefits come from their high content of omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, protein, and minerals like calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium. So, while they offer some vitamins, they are more renowned for their overall nutrient profile.

Does the combination of  bay leaf, anise seed and chia seeds work as a skin tonic?

While bay leaf, anise seed, and chia seeds offer some beneficial properties for skin health individually, there’s limited evidence to support their combined use as a skin tonic. Bay leaf and anise seed contain antioxidants, while chia seeds provide nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids. However, their effectiveness as a tonic for skin health when combined hasn’t been extensively studied. Using them as part of a balanced skincare regimen alongside proven ingredients may offer some benefits, but more research is needed for conclusive evidence.

Dr Swati Dave, Phd in Food and Nutrition

When asked  Dr. Swati Dave, dietician she said “There is no scientific evidence to the claim. Chia seeds, anise seeds, bay leaf, and water each have their own set of beneficial health effects, but there is still no research on their combined effects on health. Condiments and spices should be consumed in moderation, approximately a pinch or two. Chia seeds are fibrous in nature and can absorb water. Eating them soaked in water may promote hydration, healthy digestion, and reduced hunger. This may help you achieve your weight-loss goals.”
