Quick Take
A video of some people making artificial eggs is circulating on social media. Not directly, but the social media user who has posted the social media video seems to make people aware of having an egg factory in his country. We fact-checked and found the claim to be Mostly False.
The Claim
A video on Facebook shows some people making plastic eggs. Along with the video, the claimant wrote, ‘Egg Factory: Attention may be in our country too’.
Even though the claim is not directly said in the video, it seems the claimant wants to make people aware of having an egg factory in his country.
Fact Check
Are plastic eggs traded in the market as real ones?
Not exactly. No evidence shows plastic eggs traded in the Indian market as real ones. We researched and found that the claimant of the post is a Facebook page named Moragolla Online Media. This Facebook has 60 likes and 526 followers till we last checked. However, there is no other online presence of this media house. It has no footprint on Google.
A simple Google reverse image search on a few screenshots of the claimed video took us to some Chinese news articles which have confirmed that the video is showing the making of egg-like toys. These eggs are meant for children and do not replace real eggs. These articles have also reported that this toy is available on Chinese e-commerce platforms.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) released documents in 2018 to bust the myth of plastic eggs. These documents inform that plastic eggs or artificial eggs do not exist mainly because there is no technology that can resemble a natural egg.
Even Pawan Agarwal, then CEO of FSSAI, pointed to this issue saying ‘such news creates fear amongst the public at large and erodes their confidence in the food control system in the country.’
