Diet restrictions: Myths about period

Just In

As we know periods are a natural phenomenon that nearly half of the global population experiences. They often come with their own set of challenges. From cramps to mood swings, it’s no secret that menstruation can be uncomfortable. Amidst the overflow of advice circulating on how to ease period symptoms, there’s immeasurable misinformation and myths about period, especially regarding diet.

Can you rely only on diet to induce menstrual periods early?

Dr Anita Gupta

While diet can play a role in overall health and hormonal balance, relying solely on diet to induce periods early may not be effective. Complex interactions between hormones, including estrogen and progesterone, as well as other factors such as stress, exercise, and nutrition regulate menstruation. There is no known foolproof dietary plan that can help induce periods early. The body’s internal hormonal regulation system largely controls menstrual cycles. Dr Anita Gupta, Gynaecologist and Associate Director in Fortis La Femme, New Delhi says, “Upon carefully reviewing their patients’ medical histories, doctors frequently prescribe hormone therapy to either delay or initiate menstruation. Sportswomen typically choose this to minimize distractions during matches.” Hence, altering this system through dietary changes alone is challenging and may not produce the desired effect.

Does drinking ice water during menstruation cause cancer?

Radiation Oncologist

Drinking cold water, whether during menstruation or at any other time, does not cause cancer. The temperature of the water you drink has no known connection to cancer development. Cancer is a complex disease with multifactorial causes, including genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. It cannot be caused by simply consuming cold beverages. Dr Sarthak Moharir (MBBS, MD, Radiation Oncology), Consultant Radiation Oncologist in HCG Cancer Centre in Vadodara, Gujarat, further confirms this by stating, “It does not cause cancer, rather environmental factors do.” This notion is a myth about period and lacks any credible scientific basis.

Can eating gooseberry improve fertility?

Gynecologist

It’s important to note that fertility is influenced by a variety of factors, including genetics, lifestyle, overall health, and medical conditions. While a balanced diet that includes nutrient-rich foods like gooseberries can support overall health and potentially contribute to reproductive wellness, it’s unlikely that eating gooseberries alone will significantly improve fertility in individuals with underlying fertility issues. Expert Dr Puja Sharma is a Gynaecologist based in Delhi. She informs that “Amla or Indian Gooseberry has vitamin C and antioxidants like vitamin K and carotenoids.”

To conclude, digging through the abundance of knowledge and misconceptions around menstruation health calls for caution. Even though nutrition and lifestyle choices are important for general health, they might not be the secret to early menstruation or cancer prevention. Hormone control and fertility are complex processes that involve more than just food adjustments. Menstrual health must be holistic, taking into account a range of elements like exercise, stress reduction, and medical advice. People may empower themselves to make educated decisions and prioritize their menstrual health with confidence and clarity. This requires busting myths about period and embracing evidence-based approaches.
