Types of vaginal discharge: Is it worrisome?

Just In

One normal and crucial component of female reproductive health is vaginal discharge. It is essential for preserving vaginal cleanliness, fighting off infections, and promoting the reproductive process. Acquiring an idea of the different colours and textures and types of vaginal discharge may offer you important information about your general health. However, don’t go overboard with self-treatment for it.

What is vaginal discharge?

Dr Chandrika Anand

Dead skin cells, germs, and secretions from the cervix and vagina make up the fluid known as vaginal discharge. This discharge keeps the vagina clean and even lubricates it. It also protects the vagina from infections and maintains overall health. Types of vaginal discharge vary in amount and consistency over time due to hormonal shifts that occur during the menstrual cycle. Expert in the field, Dr Chandrika Anand, Consultant-Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Fortis Hospitals, Nagarbhavi, Bengaluru says, “Normal vaginal discharge is a little thin and watery and without a distinct smell. If the vaginal discharge becomes very frothy and you know, pinkish and frothy, it can denote a trichomonas infection.”

Vaginal discharge during pregnancy

A rise in the vaginal discharge during pregnancy acts as a barrier to prevent infections from moving from the vagina into the uterus. During pregnancy, progesterone levels rise, which thickens cervical mucus and increases the quantity of discharge. Pink streaks in vaginal discharge at the end of pregnancy indicate the start of cervical mucus shedding, which is a stage that precedes labour.

Vaginal discharge before period

Vaginal discharge changes often become apparent prior to menstruation. Brown spots may emerge just prior to the onset of menstruation, and there may be a decrease in discharge volume towards the conclusion of the menstrual cycle. This occurrence is due to the menstrual blood’s longer transit time via the cervix. This causes blood oxidation and a brownish tint. While brown discharge is usually benign, it is worth getting checked out by a doctor to rule out any underlying issues.

What are the different types of vaginal discharge?

It is crucial to comprehend the features of vaginal discharge in order to assess reproductive health and spot any infections or irregularities. Below is a quick summary of the various discharge types and their effects:

  • White Discharge: This is the most common and normal discharge which comes towards the end of the menstrual cycle. Keep a check on itching as it may indicate a yeast infection.
  • Clear and Stretchy Discharge: This is known as ‘fertile’ mucous. It signifies ovulation and a rise in fertility.
  • Clear and Watery Discharge: This takes place at various stages of the menstrual cycle. This usually increases after exercise and physical exhaustion.
  • Yellow or Green Discharge: If this discharge comes with a foul odor or clumpy texture just like cottage cheese, then it may signify an infection.
  • Brown Discharge: This comes post-menstruation. It is usually the old menstrual blood. It results from blood oxidation and is completely normal in moderation.
  • Spotting Blood: There may be mid-cycle spotting, ovulatory bleeding, or early pregnancy spotting that looks like a brownish discharge. If after sexual activity there is menstrual-like spotting, get a pregnancy test done.

Vaginal discharge is a useful marker of reproductive health since it can reveal infections, menstrual cycle phases, and hormonal changes. Dr Anand emphasizes, “any deviation in the color or the smell of the discharge and if it is associated symptoms like bleeding and itching or burning indicates an abnormal vaginal discharge.” Discharge colour and texture variations are typical, but if they persist or are odd, you should see a doctor to rule out any underlying issues. You may preserve good vaginal health and general well-being by paying attention to their discharge code, meaning and promptly seeking medical guidance when time calls for.
