Flavored condom side effects: Are they safe for vaginal sex?

Just In

Who says your pleasure should have the taste of latex with a rubbery feeling? In order to change this compromise, flavored condoms stepped into the world of intimacy. As the craze about it grows in the intimate realm of the public, the fear of flavored condoms’ side effects escalates as well. Are you also wondering whether these little tasty protective elements are harmful to your vagina? Have you ever tried it and felt something other than pleasure? Irrespective of your answer to these questions, you should dive a little deeper into this article to extract the nuances of flavored condoms.

What are flavored condoms?

Dr Manisha Singh

These condoms are custom-made contraceptives that are covered in a range of flavors. These flavors range from standard fruit flavors like strawberry and banana to more unusual possibilities like chocolate or mint. They have the same ingredients as usual latex condoms. The only difference is that they have an outer coating of the desired flavor. Dr Manisha Singh, Senior Consultant – Gynaecologist, Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, Bangalore says, “The goal of flavored condoms is to make oral sex more pleasurable by hiding the original flavor and fragrance of latex. Some individuals may find it unpleasant or bothersome during sexual encounters.” They provide an alternative to standard condoms. They aim to improve the sensory experience and enjoyment for both individuals engaging in oral sex.

Why do you need protection for oral sex?

Though awareness is working its magic with the control of sexually transmitted infections, a lot of people are still not fully aware of the ways it can be spread. A lot of people ask, if we can’t get pregnant through oral sex, then why do we need to wear condoms for it? While it’s true that you cannot get pregnant through oral sex, it can still transfer sexually transmitted illnesses (STIs). Not only vaginal or anal intercourse provides STI dangers, but oral sex without protection can also result in the spread of these infections. It is critical to make use of protective measures, such as condoms, to avoid these infections. Many STIs can be asymptomatic for extended periods of time, thus it is critical to prioritize protection regardless of obvious symptoms in partners. Here are some STIs that can be transmitted orally:

  • Herpes
  • Gonorrhea
  • Human papillomavirus
  • Syphilis
  • HIV/AIDS
Dr Prachi Sarin Sethi

While they may appear to be an amusing and harmless addition to intimacy, but flavored condom side effects are an important part to consider. “Flavoring additives may disturb vaginal pH balance, resulting in infections, and persons allergic to these compounds may feel irritation or pain”, says Dr Prachi Sarin Sethi, MD – Obstetrics & Gynaecology, MBBS, DNB – Obstetrics & Gynecology. Furthermore, using condoms, whether flavored or not, during oral intercourse is vital for STI prevention. Dr Sethi further adds, “Prioritizing communication and safety with your partner is critical while trying new sexual practices.” Remember that preserving vaginal health and general well-being should always be the first focus.
