With remarkable precision, doctors at GITAM Dental College in Visakhapatnam performed a complex surgery that saved a child from disfigurement and prevented vision loss, achieving a medical miracle.
When several hospitals had declined due to its inherent risks, doctors at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at GITAM Dental College and Hospital in Visakhapatnam successfully performed a complex medical procedure lasting nearly three hours. The intricate surgery entailed removing a lesion from an 11-year-old boy’s oral cavity, which had a high propensity to bleed during surgery, leaving a permanent facial scar. The head and neck regions account for a significant proportion of benign nervous system tumors known as schwannomas, with the maxillary sinus being found in only 4% of cases globally, with only 8 cases reported globally as of 2018. The surgery was challenging, with the possibility of accidental jaw fractures, loss of vision, or bleeding into the eye, and complicated post-operative care. However, the team of doctors, including Dr. Satya Bhushan, Head of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and Dr. U. Siva Kalyan, successfully removed the lesion using an intra-oral procedure that avoided a facial scar. The patient was discharged four days after surgery and has had a smooth recovery.
