Concerned about your dark vaginal area?

Just In

It is common for the skin surrounding the vagina to darken. However, knowing why this occurs as well as when it may indicate something is wrong is critical for vaginal health. Let’s look at the causes behind why you have a dark vaginal area along with what one can do regarding it.

Is the dark vaginal area normal?

Dr Sunita Sharma

Absolutely yes, it is quite natural for the skin surrounding your vagina to be darker than the rest of your body. It is also known as the vulva. This occurrence is known as hyperpigmentation. The quantity of pigmentation varies according to your original skin tone. It may be subtle for some, but more evident for others. Dr Sunita Sharma, Consultant Obstetrician & Gynecologist, Infertility Specialist, Fortis Nagarbhavi, Bangalore says, “This colour change happens through a rise in melanocytes.” These are the cells that produce melanin, the pigment that gives our skin its colour.

What are the reasons for darkness in private areas?

Though hyperpigmentation is a natural process, there are several factors that contribute to the dark vaginal area.

  • Hormonal Changes: Hormone levels, especially estrogen, can fluctuate during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause. Dr Gulhima Arora, Senior Consultant Dermatologist, Mehektagul Dermaclinic, New Delhi says, “The vulva’s skin may darken as a result of hormonal changes.” According to both experts, illnesses such as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), thyroid problems, and adrenal hormone imbalances can cause hyperpigmentation.
  • Infections: Genital infections, whether fungal, bacterial, or viral, may lead to inflammation and darkening of the affected skin. “Eczema and viral warts may additionally trigger localized pigmentation”, says Dr Arora.
  • Cosmetic Products: Dr Arora further adds that “Intimate area cleaning solutions, which include vaginal douches, scented soaps, and toning gels, may irritate the skin and cause it to darken.” Similarly, long-term usage of condoms or tight garments can produce friction, which eventually leads to hyperpigmentation.
  • Poor Hygiene: Deficiency of sufficient ventilation and sweat retention can cause the buildup of chemical waste products, resulting in the darkening of the intimate region.
  • Miscellaneous Factors: Excessive whey protein intake, repetitive friction from tight clothes, and chemical contact with bleaching chemicals can all lead to dark vaginal area.

What should you do if your vagina has darker skin?

To minimize friction and irritation, use loose-fitting clothing and undergarments. Keep your skin moisturized to avoid dryness and irritation, which can increase darkening. Seek options for severe hair removal treatments such as waxing or shaving, which can result in folliculitis and inflammation. Dr Arora recommends, “wearing breathable, sweat-wicking clothes to avoid sweat collection and improve genital ventilation.”

Finally, vaginal skin darkening is widespread and can be caused by a variety of physiological causes. While most occurrences are minor, it is critical to be aware of any underlying conditions, such as infections or hormone imbalances. “If you observe any strange changes or growths in the vaginal area, see a dermatologist for an accurate evaluation and diagnosis”, recommends Dr Arora. You may help keep your vaginal skin healthy and looking nice by practicing proper hygiene, wearing comfortable clothing, and avoiding harsh cosmetic items. Remember, your vaginal health is important, so listen to your body and get medical assistance as needed.
