Fact Check: Is it true that grapes cause throat infection?

Published on:
What are the consequences of consuming unwashed grapes?
Consuming unwashed grapes can pose health risks due to pesticide residues. These residues may include chemicals like Azoxystrobin, chlorpyrifos, Boscalid, and cyprodinil, which can potentially harm human health. Although rinsing fruits with 2% salt water for 10-20 minutes can remove a significant portion of pesticide residues, it's important to be cautious. Despite risks, the health benefits of eating fruits generally outweigh potential pesticide exposure.

Quick Take

A video on social media claims that consumption of grapes can cause throat infections. We fact checked and found the claim to be half true.

Fact Check Rating

The Claim

An instagram video by the name nikhil spreads claims that eating grapes covered in pesticides causes throat problem and soaking the grapes in salt water will help get rid of the pesticides.

Fact Check

What is the video all about?

The video discusses a man addressing concerns about grapes and the pesticides used on them, which can cause throat irritation. It shows farmers dipping grapes in an unknown white substance. Upon research, it’s revealed that European grape cultivars, face a threat from powdery mildew caused by the fungus Erysiphe necator. This disease damages grapes and lowers quality. Growers typically combat it with sulphur, oils, and synthetic fungicides. In organic farming, alternatives like milk and whey have proven effective. Studies show that weekly applications of milk or whey can outperform some synthetic fungicides in controlling powdery mildew.

Can grapes lead to a sore throat, fever, or throat pain?

Generally, eating grapes doesn’t directly cause sore throat, fever, or throat pain. However, some individuals may have grapes allergy, someone may be dealing with malaria or tooth decay which could lead to throat irritation. Additionally, if grapes are contaminated with bacteria or pesticides, they could potentially cause symptoms. To minimise the risk, it’s important to wash grapes thoroughly before consumption.

Do certain pesticides cause some kind of cancer?

Certain pesticides have been linked to an increased risk of cancer, including throat cancer. Exposure to pesticides, especially over long periods or at high levels, can potentially contribute to the development of various cancers, including those affecting the throat area. However, the specific relationship between pesticides and cancer may vary depending on factors such as the type of pesticide, the duration and intensity of exposure, and individual susceptibility. It’s crucial to handle and use pesticides safely and to minimize exposure through protective measures to reduce potential health risks. The pesticide residues on food items mainly originate from farming and/or from pesticide applications during food storage and transport. Additionally, regular screening and adopting a healthy lifestyle can help in cancer prevention.

How effective is washing grapes in salt water?

Washing grapes in salt water can be reasonably effective in cleaning them. The saltwater solution helps to dislodge dirt, debris, and some pesticide residues from the surface of the grapes. However, it may not entirely remove all pesticide residues, as some can adhere firmly to the fruit or penetrate its skin. While saltwater washing enhances cleanliness, it’s advisable to also rinse grapes under running water to minimize potential pesticide exposure further. Overall, while it improves cleanliness, it might not eliminate all pesticide residues.

Botanist

When we asked Nidhi Singh, Botanist she replied “Grapes have had a long history of evolving alongside humans, mostly because they contain the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin, which can help maintain eye health. They are thought to neutralize unstable molecules known as free radicals. A recent study shows that two cups of grapes per day may be the ideal amount – an amount the research shows could even help one live longer.

However, post-harvest practices to improve the shelf life of these berries are the reason for growing concern among consumers, even the fruit flies are keeping themselves far away from these new-age berries, they are great at being bio-indicators and you will rarely observe them hovering over these modern agricultural products. The present survey has shown 59.6% pesticide residues being detected on the table grapes that we intake, the most prevalent pesticide residues found were Azoxystrobin, chlorpyrifos, Boscalid, and cyprodinil, perhaps the fruit flies know better. The solution to avoid consuming residues is to remind ourselves of the old saying as clean as a whistle.

Rinsing and soaking your vegetables and fruits with 2% salt water for 10-20 minutes should get rid of 70-80% of the pesticide residues, use room temperature or cold water to rinse.”
