What are the ways to get vitamin D during the winter months?

Our body needs optimum levels of vitamin D to function properly. The best source of Vitamin D is Sunlight. It is an essential nutrient that helps in better absorption of calcium from the diet. It also helps in immunity and strengthening bones, muscles, and teeth. Its deficiency can lead to a loss in bone density thereby increasing the risk of bone disorders such as osteoporosis, rickets, and fractures.

In winters, the exposure to sunlight is inadequate due to the cold weather. It can be partially compensated through diet. In case the levels are extremely low, the doctor may prescribe supplements.

Fatty fish and egg yolk are naturally rich in vitamin D. If in a blood test, your vitamin D levels are too low, then the doctor may prescribe a dose of vitamin shot or recommend a supplement. Doses can differ and taking too much vitamin D can be toxic, so always consult your physician before taking any supplements. Also, try going out in the sun whenever possible, or place your chair near a window through which sunlight can penetrate.

Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) recommends a daily supplement of 400 IU/day of vitamin D for Indians under situations of minimal exposure to sunlight.
