Gestational diabetes can increase the odds of pregnancy complications. If you are diagnosed with gestational diabetes, your high blood sugar levels can affect your baby since the baby gets nutrients from your blood.
Most women with gestational diabetes deliver healthy babies if they get good treatment. But if gestational diabetes is not detected or controlled, both mother and baby can have certain complications.
Complications for mother:
- Risk of high blood pressure
- Likeliness to develop type 2 diabetes in future
Complications for baby:
- Macrosomia (a condition in which higher amount of blood glucose passes through the placenta into the fetal circulation. Due to this, extra glucose in the fetus is stored as body fat and the baby grows too large)
- Pre-term birth
- Low blood sugar
