Fact Check
What is black garlic?
Black garlic is a regular garlic made to go through a process of aging by fermenting it under controlled high-temperature, high-humidity conditions for several weeks. These garlics are not harvested black. They are regular garlic that turns black after the process of fermentation.
According to a report published by Thailand’s Mahidol University, Black Garlic is formed through the curing process (Fermentation) at a temperature of about 60-90 degrees Celsius and controls the humidity to 80-90% for at least 1 month until the garlic turns black.
Can Garlic or Black Garlic cure Cancer?
The claim regarding the black garlic being able to cure 14 types of Cancer has been debunked multiple times by Fact Checkers and health experts.
Thailand’s state-run National Cancer Institute calls this as misinformation in its report titled: “Fake news, don’t share!”
Garlic has been tested for its efficacies in preventing Cancer but a lot more human studies are required.
Dr. Manish Singhal, Senior Oncologist mentions, “A lot of studies have been done with turmeric and garlic. These are known for their anti-oxidant properties. However, we still haven’t been able to identify the exact dosage of Garlic or Turmeric in which they can become effective. It is good to add them in your diet, but depending on them for Cancer cure is not the right thing to do.”
