Can low vitamin D levels cause erectile dysfunction?
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a consistent inability to achieve penile erection. Ageing, smoking, obesity, injuries, heart disease, diabetes, and mental health issues cause ED. Vitamin D has a role in male erectile function. It prevents heart disease, improves blood flow, increases testosterone, and maintains penis structure. However, studies are inconclusive on whether vitamin D deficiency produces erectile dysfunction.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin essential for mineral balance and bone health. Research studies have discovered other roles in recent times. It plays a role in autoimmune diseases, cancer, diabetes, depression, hypertension, and heart disease. Erectile dysfunction is a medical condition whose occurrence is on the rise. Research estimates that ED will affect 320 million men worldwide by 2025. In this article, we will talk about the link between erectile dysfunction and vitamin D.

What is erectile dysfunction (ED)?

Erectile dysfunction is the consistent lack of sufficient penile erection for sexual intercourse. It can affect the sexual, mental, and physical health of a man. It also impacts the well-being of their partner. ED can lead to relationship problems.

Most cases occur between the ages of 60 and 70. However, the younger population can also develop ED.

What are the risk factors for erectile dysfunction?

Together, bodily and psychological factors are the causes of ED.

Damage to the nerves or blood vessels of the penis can cause ED. The male hormone testosterone is necessary for sexual function. Low levels of testosterone lead to ED. Other illnesses can also lead to ED. For example, heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, and diabetes. Spinal injuries and pelvic surgery are other causes of ED.

The chances of developing erectile dysfunction (ED) increase with age. Smoking, prostate enlargement, and urinary tract infections are also risk factors for ED. The psychological risk factors include depression, performance anxiety, and stress.

Is vitamin D good for ED?

Researchers have found that vitamin D is important for male sexual function. Low levels of vitamin D impair sexual functioning. Men with lower vitamin D levels are more likely to develop erectile dysfunction (ED). There are different mechanisms of correlation between ED and vitamin D.

The endothelial cells (cells around blood vessels) should produce nitric oxide (NO). It relaxes blood vessels and increases blood flow to the genital area. Vitamin D helps produce nitric oxide (NO) to improve blood flow and cause penile erection.

Heart diseases, such as atherosclerosis, directly connect with ED. Arteries of ED patients are more likely clogged with calcium than healthy adults. Vitamin D handles calcium availability in the body. Its deficiency increases the calcium deposition in the arteries. Thus, vitamin D deficiency can increase the incidence of ED through arterial calcification.

Additionally, vitamin D helps with proper penis development even before a baby is born. Studies on animals show this link.

What is the relationship between vitamin D, testosterone, and ED?

Many scientific studies suggest that vitamin D increases testosterone levels in the blood. The exact mechanism by which vitamin D causes the increase is unknown.

Additionally, vitamin D deficiency (VDD) reduces the testosterone concentration in the blood. However, a recently published study (2021) did not find a link between VDD and testosterone concentration.

Research remains divided on the link between vitamin D and testosterone concentrations. Additional studies are necessary to clarify the relationship.

What dose of vitamin D can treat erectile dysfunction?

ED and vitamin D are co-related. Maintaining adequate vitamin D is beneficial for erectile function.

There are ways to get vitamin D:

  • Sun exposure for 5 to 30 minutes daily
  • Vitamin-rich foods such as mushrooms, cheese, milk, eggs and fish
  • Vitamin D supplementation, but only with doctor’s guidance.

It is uncertain whether vitamin D supplements can impact ED. Yet, a study examined the effect of vitamin D in combination with the ED medicine tadalafil. Vitamin D showed complementary positive effects in treating ED. The study used a daily dose of 4000 IU of vitamin D3.
