Stress is an unavoidable part of life. Everyone, irrespective of profession, age, and background, is affected by it. The causes of stress in psychology are everyday responses to daily life pressures. Everyone has separate environmental triggers for stress. In today’s fast-paced world, it’s crucial to understand the various factors that contribute to stress. Once we identify the causes behind stress, we can work towards managing and reducing its impact on our physical and mental well-being.

What are the emotional causes of stress?

The emotional cause of stress could originate from various sources. These could be feelings of being overburdened by several responsibilities or obligations, having or going through excess anxiety or worry about the future, going through grief over losing a loved one, uncertainty or instability in life, having interpersonal conflicts, whether in family or at work, having periods of low self-confidence, and feeling a sense of emotional withdrawal.

Other factors include facing traumatic events, having past issues that could not be resolved, struggling with high expectations or perfectionism, experiencing isolation or loneliness, and the feeling that they cannot control their lives.

How does fear cause stress?

Fear is an emotional reaction to something dangerous. It is a natural feeling that could make us unsure, stop us from acting, and fill our minds with worry. For instance, when we experience fear of losing someone we love or hear sad news, it may deeply affect us.

During this intense state of worry or fear, the brain understands this situation as a potential threat and releases stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. This helps us prepare ourselves to take action.

Moreover, in our body, there is an increased flow of chemicals in the bloodstream. We begin to experience shallow breathing, high alertness, and an increased heart rate

If this is left uncontrolled, it leads to panic. This affects the body by causing digestive problems, weak immune function, and anxiety disorders. In the long run, living with this constant fear will affect decision-making abilities and the body’s overall well-being.

How are hormones associated with stress?

Living under fear affects the body both physically and mentally. This is because, the hormones cortisol and adrenaline, released during stress by the HPA axis, are increased in the bloodstream beyond their required limit.

They would speed the body’s metabolic processes exceedingly. As a result, there is an increased flow of blood inside blood vessels (high BP), an excess surge of energy, and a hyperactive state of the brain

Although useful, these processes in excess can disturb the body’s homeostatic balance and result in a weakened immune system or altered gastrointestinal function. In this way, hormones play a crucial role in how our bodies respond to stress and can have significant impacts on our overall well-being.

What makes people stressed at work?

Managing and maintaining work-life balance is a crucial challenge for people. Nowadays, having and maintaining a job with all the pressures is a major challenge. After working for longer periods, some become unhappy with the job. The reasons are a high workload and having too much responsibility at work. This leads to working longer hours. It is important to manage life at the workplace.

Nowadays, organisations are planning special policies to help individuals manage their work-life balance. They understand that the leading cause of stress, especially for young people, is a job. Managing and handling events leading to stress must be handled with open discussion with your colleagues. This will also help with better stress management at the workplace.
