Why did my fibroids come back?

Uterine fibroids (UF) are the most common benign tumor pathology of the female reproductive organs. In this article, we will learn if fibroids can come back after removal, and if so, then why.

Can fibroids come back after removal?

It is possible. The fibroids won’t grow back after surgery, but you may develop new fibroids. Research shows that about 90 out of 100 women who undergo myomectomy (surgical removal of the fibroids) are satisfied with the results even after one to two years post-surgery. However, in up to 20 out of 100 women, fibroids grow again within the first few years after the surgical removal. As published in Havard Health, fibroids may recur in cases of myomectomy since the uterus isn’t removed. 10% to 33% of women undergoing myomectomy might require a second surgery within five years. A hysterectomy is the only way to cure fibroids. The fibroids can’t come back, and your symptoms should go away after the removal of the uterus.

What can be the reason behind the recurrence of fibroids?

In most cases, the fibroids that are surgically removed won’t grow back. However, the fibroids that remain undetected during the surgery might grow. Additionally, even the fibroids that are not completely removed during the removal will also eventually grow and cause symptoms.

Furthermore, there might be the growth of one or more new fibroids. Women who had only one fibroid previously will have a lower risk of developing new fibroids than women who had multiple fibroids. The exact cause of fibroids is still unknown. Various factors have been associated with playing a role in their occurrence. Genes that accelerate the growth of uterine muscle cells may play a role. Abnormalities in uterine blood vessels may also be involved. Researchers believe that even though the initiators for uterine fibroid remain unknown, estrogens and progesterone are considered promoters of fibroid growth.

Research concluded that those women with multiple fibroids (uterine leiomyomas) and those in the third decade of life should be counselled thoroughly about the risk of recurrence prior to laparoscopic myomectomy (laparoscopic removal of the fibroids).

In conclusion, you must get regular checkups even after undergoing a fibroid removal surgery.
