Research states that fibroids are diagnosed in up to 70% of white women and more than 80% of women of African ancestry during their lifetime, leaving a profound impact on health care delivery and costs worldwide. In this article, we will learn whether some people are prone to fibrosis more than others and which risk factors are associated with uterine fibroids.

Are some people more prone to fibroids than others?

Yes. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, the prevalence of fibroids is most common amongst women between the age group of 30 to 40. Similarly, it is believed that fibroids occur more often among Black American women than the White American women in US. However, it is believed that these differences may be due to racism and the inequities due to it in the society, which can increase the risk of health problems. Lastly, genetics may play a role, as fibroids may run in families. Please note that even though the likelihood increases amongst the above-mentioned people, uterine fibroids can occur at any age and can affect any race.

Which risk factors are associated with uterine fibroids?

Research states that there are certain risk factors associated with fibrosis, both of which are modifiable and non-modifiable. The risk factors include:

  1. Age: It is believed that older women are at higher risk than younger women.
  2. Race: An epidemiology published on uterine fibroid states that the Black Americans are recurrently reported to have an increased two-threefold risk compared to the white race.
  3. Premenopausal state: Researchers believe that uterine fibroids are the most common benign gynecologic tumours in premenopausal women worldwide
  4. Hypertension: Researchers have claimed that there might be an association of uterine fibroids with the prevalence of hypertension. Therefore, it is advised that women with uterine fibroids should be closely monitored for hypertension.
  5. Obesity: The meta-analysis results of a study done in 2019 suggest that obesity may increase the risk/prevalence of Uterine Fibroids.
  6. Lifestyle: Various factors such as diet, caffeine and alcohol consumption, physical activity, stress, and smoking are primarily associated with the occurrence of uterine fibroids. Research states that the consumption of fruits and vegetables plays a protective role

However, we will need further studies to understand better the factors that influence fibroid prevalence as there are certain aspects that are still not studied well.
