Ovarian cysts and diet have been related significantly to each other. Abnormal hormonal levels are associated with ovarian cysts. However, we need further research.

How does diet affects ovarian cyst?

The ovarian cysts normally occur due to hormonal changes during puberty or menopause. What we eat significantly affects our hormones. In this way, diet plays a direct role in ovarian cysts. Some studies have indicated that diet may affect the function of the ovaries. The diet and nutrition directly affect the sexual hormones and their binding proteins. Furthermore, fat also has an impact on prostaglandin metabolism, thereby impacting the ovarian function.

Additionally, the plasma levels of Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) are directly associated with the energy levels, which comes from the diet. IGF1 is also affects the production of estrogen. It also affects the ovulation and development of follicles.

Certain factors that directly affect the function of ovaries include a high fat and high energy diet, insulin resistance, glucose tolerance, and dyslipidemia.

How are ovarian cysts and diet interrelated?

Various studies have been conducted to find the association between ovarian cysts and diet. As per the findings of a study, women with ovarian cysts have an higher amount of fat consumption. However, this difference was not statistically significant. Therefore, it is recommended that women of reproductive age should reduce their fat intake.

Similarly, another research concluded that polyunsaturated and vegetable fat may increase the risk of benign ovarian tumours. Although, vitamin A is considered to lower the risk of these tumours.

If you have ovarian cysts, you should consume anti-inflammatory foods, lean proteins, leafy vegetables, and high-fibre foods in order to balance the hormonal levels. There are certain food items that you should consume and avoid certain food items with ovarian cysts.

According to European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology, an association between ovarian cysts and the consumption of beef and cheese was found during the study of the relation between selected dietary indicators and the risk of benign ovarian cysts. Contrastingly, high intake of green vegetables are likely to have a protective effect.

In a study done on mice, an article published in the Endocrine Society concluded that a rapid growth in tumor was seen in obese mice. It suggested that endogenous sex steroids, together with diet, affect adiposity, insulin sensitivity, and tumor growth in female mice. This suggests that diet plays a significant role as if the diet is leading to obesity, it will increase the susceptibility of ovarian cysts and tumors.
