What is the effect of estrogen on blood pressure?

Estrogen helps keep your blood pressure down because of its vasodilative effect, which allows your blood vessels to widen so that blood can flow more easily. There are also speculations that estrogen also helps in keeping your cholesterol levels down.

Research that studied the role between Estrogen and Hypertension stated that usually during menopause, a lot of women experience hypertension. This suggests that there might be a protective role of endogenous estradiol (a type of estrogen) on the blood pressure (BP). Studies done on animals as well as human clinical trials suggest that estrogen is involved in various mechanisms that protect against hypertension.

Also, according to the National Kidney Foundation, Michigan State University (MSU) researchers found that there can be excessive levels of a compound called superoxide on long-term estrogen, which eventually causes stress in the body. It must be noted here that the superoxide build-up occurs in that part of the brain that is vital in regulating blood pressure. This suggests that chronic estrogen production induces a build-up of superoxide that, in turn, causes blood pressure to increase.
