The female reproductive system consists of two ovaries that release eggs every month to initiate reproduction and maintain the oestrogen and progesterone balance. The cancer-causing risk factors attack the ovarian epithelial cells, germ cells and stromal cells to change the DNA and induce uncontrolled cancer cell growth.
Cancer cells in ovaries grow out of control to spread throughout the body. The potential lifestyle, environmental, heredity and occupational risk factors profusely grow cancer cells to confuse the immune system and attack the normal cells within ovaries.
Earlier researchers believed that ovarian cancer always begins in the ovaries. However, recent studies have shown that cancer cells may start developing in the fallopian tube to reach ovaries. The fallopian tubes hold ovaries and allow smooth movement of eggs to the uterus without causing any damage. Although cancer in the fallopian tube is rare, high-grade cancers arise from the fallopian tube rather than ovaries.
Besides this, ovarian cysts are quite common to hear among women. A cyst is nothing but a collection of cells that forms a clump in an area. Usually, doctors are not concerned about cysts in women because often cysts dissolve on their own. However, if a woman has hit menopause or has not started with her periods, then a doctor can recommend tests to rule out ovarian cancer.
