What is Multidrug Resistant Tuberculosis?

Multidrug-Resistant (MDR) Tuberculosis is a type that does not respond to the medication for the treatment of the condition. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) website, MDR specifically does not respond to isoniazid and rifampicin which are two ‘most powerful anti-TB drugs’. The WHO website has also provided (2016) data to show China, India and the Russian Federation contributed approximately 47% of the total tuberculosis cases globally.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website explains resistance to treatment of tuberculosis occurs only when the ‘drugs are misused or mismanaged’. The same has been confirmed by other published papers. A (2015) study suggests risk factors such as failure to respond to the first-line of treatment, relapse after treatment, default treatment, exposure to a person with MDR-TB, HIV co-infection etc., make healthy people prone to tuberculosis.

The treatment of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis is complicated because this type does not react to the first line of treatment while the second line of treatment is generally weak. A few published research notes have discussed different medications that may help with reducing the symptoms to a certain extent.

In conclusion, multidrug-resistant tuberculosis is difficult to treat and needs better study on indicators that can confirm the condition at its early stages. That being the case, we found a (2021) study that suggests “Age, gender, body mass index, tuberculosis treatment history, time of sputum conversion, acid-fast bacilli sputum smear, HIV infection, chronic kidney disease, and cavitary lesion” may become helpful in diagnosing the condition.
