Gestational hypertension is a form of high blood pressure that occurs in pregnancy. It is considered gestational hypertension if:

  1. The blood pressure exceeds 140/90 mm Hg after 20 weeks of pregnancy.
  2. Two or more such incidents at least four hours apart.
  3. No organ damage.

This condition is also called Pregnancy-Induced Hypertension (PIH).

The American Pregnancy Association states that gestational hypertension can cause preeclampsia, also called toxemia, a serious condition. Around 6-8% of pregnant women are generally affected by hypertension during pregnancy.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention further describes it as a condition that occurs when a woman only has high blood pressure during pregnancy and does not have protein in her urine or other heart or kidney problems. Usually, it is diagnosed after 20 weeks of pregnancy or close to delivery. In most cases, it goes away after a woman gives birth. However, there is a higher risk of developing chronic hypertension in the future in a few such cases.

The treatment depends on how close the pregnant woman is to the due date. If you have mild hypertension and your baby is not fully developed, your doctor will probably recommend resting or lying on your left side to take the baby’s weight off your major blood vessels, reducing salt consumption, consuming 8 glasses of water a day and increasing prenatal checkups.

In case the pregnant woman has severe hypertension, your doctor may try to treat her with blood pressure medication until the woman is far enough along to deliver safely.
