Low blood pressure refers to a reading of less than 90/60mmHg. Sudden drop in the blood pressure can be dangerous. If the blood pressure drops suddenly by just 20 mm Hg, it can cause dizziness and fainting. And the big drops that are caused by uncontrolled bleeding, severe infections or allergic reactions can be life-threatening.
Potential complications of low blood pressure (hypotension) include dizziness, weakness, fainting and injury from falls. Extreme low blood pressure can reduce the oxygen levels of the body. It can further lead to heart and brain damage.
The low blood pressure causes lack of blood flow to the organs of the body, because of which those organs will start to fail. It will eventually result in life-threatening conditions such as stroke, heart attack, kidney failure, and bowel ischemia (decreased blood supply to the small and large intestine). Ultimately, shock and death can be the end result of prolonged low blood pressure.
